Unit 4 Section 1 Part 6 ATOMIC ANXIETY

A. THE HYDROGEN BOMB 1950s, a new weapon being studied: the Hydrogen Bomb Fused atoms together (like the sun and stars) Hundreds of times more powerful than atomic bomb Many argued against creating it President Truman decided to create one for fear that the USSR would November 1, 1952, 1 st U.S. Hydrogen bomb detonated August, 1953, the USSR detonated one as well

B. THE ARMS RACE Both U.S. and USSR sought to outdo each other Both sides began stockpiling weapons Each advancement was met by the other side, becoming an arms race Nukes created new military strategy focusing less on soldiers In the 1950s, U.S. needed new ways of delivering nukes Instead of relying on B-52’s, U.S. began to develop missiles U.S. developed first ICBM in the late 1950s (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile)

U.S. also began attempting to use non-destructive nuclear energy 1954, U.S. launched 1 st nuclear submarine called the Nautilus Nuclear fuel heated water to create steam Nautilus could go for months w/o refueling Nuclear power plants were also being created to generate electricity

USSR advanced alongside U.S. In 1957, Soviets launched Sputnik into space, 1 st manmade satellite A month later, Sputnik II put a dog into space U.S. began to feel inferior 1958, NASA was created to explore outer space

C. AMERICANS REACT TO THE THREAT OF NUCLEAR WAR Americans feared nuclear war Also feared nuclear fallout, radiation produced by nuclear energy Hydrogen bomb explosion caused serious burns and one death of nearby fishermen U.S. began to prepare for nuclear attacks Federal Civil Defense Administration was created to educate public for nuclear emergencies Bomb shelters built w/ houses, duck and cover drills at school, warning sirens Increased fears in the U.S.
