WHAT IS IT? ● Pre WWII movement from ● inspiration from fauvism and post- impressionism ● Included painters, thinkers, and writers ● More of a social/political mindset that emphasized change in society ● Embodied the changes in Germany at the time

German expressionism sought to “arouse man against his temporal masters by constantly reminding him of his inalienable humanity”. (Thanks, Mr. Adolf D. Klarmann for writing about German Expressionism) (You’re a homie)

CHARACTERISTICS ● distortion, little emphasis on harmony ● colorful ● agitated brushstrokes ● art style differs from artist to artist. no one, uniform way to paint like an expressionist ● attempts to depict emotion

Max Beckmann, “The Night” (is usually classified as Expressionist but he rejects the term and movement)

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, “Fränzi in front of Carved Chair” 1910

Otto Dix, “Prague Street” 1920

Edvard Munch, “The Scream” 1893 Although not actually German (he’s from ye olde Norway), Munch is often associated with the Expressionists.
