Distracted Driver Crashes
Distracted Driving Study - HIPRC O Design: 7900 drivers observed at controlled intersections in 6 large counties O Results: Nearly 1 in 10 drivers (9.2%) were using cell phones or texting behind the wheel Nearly half of distracted drivers were texting or manipulating a wireless communication device

Relative Risk of Crash with Distracted Driving Citation
Discussion Considerations O T he rate of distracted driving involvement in fatal crashes has remained relatively steady over time (even before the wide use of cell phones/electronics in cars.) O Cell phone use by drivers has increased dramatically in recent years (perhaps even beyond the 10% use observed in the Harborview survey O Cell phone use as a subset of distracted driving doesn’t show up dramatically in fatal crash reports O The National Safety Council estimates 26% of all crashes (not just fatal and serious ) involve cell phone use by the driver. O So far, Washington’s distracted driving program has focused on electronics use (High Visibility Enforcement patrols and agency request legislation to strengthen the cell/texting laws.) O The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is working with vehicle manufacturers to give a safety a high priority as they develop in-car technology.
Discussion Question #1 O What role does reporting play in our understanding of the distracted driving problem? O How is the broad “inattention” code used by officers?
Discussion Question #2 O In the last ten years: O Overall fatalities have been on the decrease, O Distracted driving as a factor in fatal crashes has remained steady, O Cell phone use in cars has been on the increase. Based on these trends, what should we be communicating to the public about distracted driving?
