 Gave Jews a homeland  caused conflict due to the displacement of the Palestinian people *Conflict still continues today between Israel and Palestine.

* in 1948 the Soviets’ attempted to remove the Allies from Berlin by cutting off access to the city  Soviets blocked all roads leading to West Berlin and its 2.5 million inhabitants

 the United States organized a massive airlift of 277,000 flights into the city carrying food, medicine, and other supplies  after 11 months, the Soviets lifted the blockade

 NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) (1949) – an alliance of nations that consisted of the United States, Canada, and the democracies in Europe to prevent against Soviet expansion in Europe

 communist Mao Zedong led a revolution against the Chinese nationalists for control of the country that erupted into a civil war

 Communist took over Beijing forming the People’s Republic of China  the nationalists fled to the island of Taiwan retaining the title of Republic of China

*After ww2 the soviet Union occupied north Korea. *They created a Communist state. *U.S. and allies occupied South Korea to keep it democratic.

 When communist North Korea invaded South Korea to unify the nation  American military forces led a counterattack that drove deep into North Korea  This was supported by the U.N.

 Communist Chinese forces came into the war on the side of North Korea  eventually ended in a stalemate  Kept a separate North and South Korea

 General Douglas MacArthur was fired by Harry Truman for not keeping China out of the war  Marked a turning point in containment. U.S. was willing to use its military to fight communism

 played on American fears of communism  Accused people in Gov’t of being communist  Eventually McCarthy is put on trial

 led to the coining of the term McCarthyism, or the making of false accusations based on rumor or guilt by association.
