All rights reserved. 3 of 13 Legislation The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA) This sets out the main principles by which health and safety at work is regulated in the UK today. It outlines how employers and employees create, maintain and operate a safe work environment. This Act is law ( statutory ), which means it is binding and criminal penalties can be imposed on people who do not comply with the regulations.

If you were working in a public area, it would include the safety of the general public. Health Safety Welfare

This may include: Training in the use of access equipment like ladders and scaffold towers Training for power tools, such as grinders or drills Some building sites will carry out a site induction as part of the training, prior to entry.

In turn, the employees have a responsibility for the health and safety of others. This makes health, safety and welfare at work the responsibility of everyone.

All rights reserved. 9 of 13 Legislation Employee responsibility As an employee, you will need to take reasonable care with any work carried out on site. It is important to always be conscious of health and safety issues. This can involve a wide range of simple actions, such as warning people, putting signs up, putting a barrier up or opening a window.

This means that if your employer has established a sensible and effective procedure for carrying out a particular job it must be followed. It also means that you should not intentionally or recklessly misuse any piece of equipment.

If there are any faulty tools, dangerous practices or dangerous situations, you need to advise your employer of them.
