 There are over 2.5 million Registered Nurses  59% work in hospital  Job at out of hospitals:  Clinics, Short stay surgery centers  Schools, Rehab facilities  Home care settings

 National shortage of nurses and growing more serious (supply and demand shortage)  Associated concerns patient safety and quality of hospital-based care  Severe shortage of nursing faculty  Need to increase attention on academic preparation of professional nurses – education matters

 Kentucky fortunate to date in terms of nursing shortage, only a matter of time  Beginning 2012 and by 2020 Kentucky will need additional 6,800 nurses  Kentucky has 12 BSN and 24 Associate Degree programs  Graduate 2 + associate degree nurses (1,371 graduated 2005) for 1 BSN (633 graduated)  Overall enrollments have grown  Highly competitive undergraduate and graduate market  UK nursing must differentiate itself

 Student must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a national licensing examination, known as the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN)  Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT)
