CONSERVATION OF MECHANICAL ENERGY
It takes work to lift a mass against the pull (force) of gravity The force of gravity is m·g, where m is the mass, and g is the gravitational acceleration.
Kinetic and Potential Energy Notes Chapter 5-2. Mechanical Kinetic Energy Amount of energy an object has based on motion Depends on the mass of the object.

July 11, 2016 EF 151 Final Team Project The Power Switch for the Lazy Student

July 11, 2016 Team Members  Brittany Arnold Aerospace Engineering  Paul Fox Industrial Engineering  Samantha Koelman Industrial Engineering  Adam Tuesburg Nuclear Engineering

July 11, 2016 Purpose:  Our device was designed to help a student turn his/her stereo on when he or she firsts get back from a long day of classes on the hill. The student has no remote control and it is too far away to reach while sitting in their chair. So this device turns the stereo on with just a pull of a string.

July 11, 2016 Step 1:  Pull a string to get device started.  Releases a marble.

July 11, 2016 Step 2:  Marble rolls down a chute.  Marble sets off the trap.  Trap releases and pulls a string to release the holding peg.

July 11, 2016 Step 3:  Holding peg is pulled out.  Rubber band is released.

July 11, 2016 Step 4:  Rubber Band shoots the rod.  Rod is pushed with enough force to turn on the stereo.

July 11, 2016 Step 5:  Stereo is turned on.  Student can now enjoy listening to his favorite radio station.

July 11, 2016 Potential to Kinetic Energy mgh =.5mv 2 (.005kg)(9.81m/s 2 )(.27305m) =.5(.005kg)v kg m 2 /s 2 =.0025kgv m 2 /s 2 = v 2 V = m/s V = 2.31 m/s

July 11, 2016 Elastic Potential to Kinetic.5kx 2 =.5mv 2.5( kg/s 2 ) (8.0012m 2 ) =.5(.004kg)v kg m 2 /s 2 = (.002kg)v m 2 /s 2 = v m/s = v 3.87 m/s = v

July 11, 2016 Elastic Potential to Kinetic.5kx 2 =.5mv 2.5( kg/s 2 )(.10162m 2 ) =.5(.04kg)(v 2 ) ( kg m2/s 2 ) = (.02kg)v m 2 /s 2 = v m/s = v

July 11, 2016 Conclusions:  Overall the device was successful  It is possible to build a device that uses three different energy forms.
