Purpose This lesson will help prepare you to teach a period of instruction, develop learning objectives, and use training aids.

1. State the five critical elements in preparing to teach 2. Identify the three parts of a learning objective 3. Describe the use of training aids in instruction 4. State the eight tips for lesson planning 5. Identify the four phases of a lesson plan and the three components of each phase 6. Name at least three learning activities for each phase 7. Identify several teaching methods and when each is used 8. Define “Cooperative Learning Strategy”

CPS Key Word Questions (1-3)

 Quantitative  Qualitative  Facilitator  ___________ – use numbers to measure performance.  _________ – requires the evaluator to make a judgment.  ________ – a person or organization who tries to help another person or organization to do or to achieve a particular goal.

CPS Lesson Questions (1-2)

B.Very – I could be generally successful, but could benefit from more practice. C.Somewhat – I could get started, but I would need a lot of assistance to be successful. D.Basic – I am not very confident right now… but I’m ready to improve!

True or False: There are three parts of a learning objective. A.True B.False

What makes a good teacher? List 2-3 things that an instructor does that helps you learn. (Use CPS “Pick a Student” for this question)

 At some point in your life you will probably be called upon to instruct others about something on which you are an expert.  It is important to know how to plan and execute a lesson.

1. Motivation – a drive that comes from within you 2. Knowledge of your material – plan and practice 3. Lesson objectives – skills, knowledge, or attitudes your students should have after instruction 4. Training aids – materials that help you teach 5. Lesson plan – organized outline for instruction

1. Practice the pacing of your presentation 2. Use an attention grabbing opener 3. Communicate the learning objectives 4. Review previously taught material 5. Advise students of safety requirements 6. Follow your lesson plan using training aids 7. Reinforce instruction with practical exercises 8. Reteach if necessary after a Q & A time

determine the lesson’s starting point Inquire collect information about the topic Gather use new information and practice new skills Process make real-life applications of the new information Apply 3 Components of Each Phase 1.Direct Student Focus 2.Learning Activity 3.Reflection

CPS Lesson Question (4)

In what phase of instruction would you ask the following question while planning? What can students do to reinforce their understanding of the new concept? A.Inquire B.Gather C.Process D.Apply

an informative talk given to the class Lecture ask leading questions to get the class to think about and discuss main points Discussion/Conference show a task and have students practice performing the task Demonstration learners perform the operation, skill, or procedure being taught Practical Exercise a problem-solving technique where ideas are discussed Brainstorming Oral or written account of a realistic situation Case Study Participants compete to perform a skill relevant to the learning objective Gaming
