Presentation transcript:

The Dutch come to America Henry Hudson an Englishman employed by the Dutch sailed up the waters today known as the Hudson River Dutch Government – authorized the settlement of New Netherland today known as New York and New Amsterdam was the capital in 1625 known today as New York City New Sweden – the Dutch took over the territory around the Delaware River in 1655

The Dutch were slow to settle so Germans, French, Scandinavians and some free and enslaved Africans were accepted in the colony The Dutch had better relationships with the Natives King Charles II did not like that the Dutch expansion as it separated the Northern and Southern English colonies so he sent the Duke of York to drive out the Dutch. James succeeded in driving out the Dutch and renamed New Amsterdam New York Duke also gave some land to a friend and named it New Jersey and the Quakers shared it

Further English Settlements In 1667 at age 22 William Penn joined the Society of Friends also called Quakers King Charles gave Penn a piece of American land to satisfy a debt and with that Penn set sail Penn settled in current day Pennsylvania and allowed for complete religious tolerance – may Quakers settled here

This undated image depicts a feature of Quaker religious practice that made early Friends so repugnant to other denominations: their insistence on equality for women, including the right-- in defiance of the apostle Paul's injunctions--to speak in Meeting for Worship and to preach the Gospel.

Northwest Passage As exploration began and no passage across the Atlantic Ocean to Asia could be found, the French decided to try and find a Northern route. It was much farther North than first believed, but France kept searching and discovered many beautiful lands. The actual passage was believed to be a myth till 1903 when discovered by Roald Amundsen.
