What is guided reading?  “An instructional context for supporting each reader’s development of effective strategies for processing novel texts at increasingly challenging levels of difficulty” (Fountas & Pinnell, 1996, p.25).

“The Romance with guided reading is well under way!”  “The reality is that continuous professional learning is needed to ensure that this instructional approach is powerful”.

I “To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high- quality increasingly challenging literary and informational texts” (CCSS, p. 10). “It is vital to support students in taking on more challenging texts so that they can grow as readers, using the text gradient as a ‘ladder of progress’ (Clay, 1991, p.15).

 “There is an important difference between implementing parts of a guided reading lesson and using guided reading to bring readers from where they are to as far as the teaching can take them in a given school year.”

“We address three big areas that offer new learning in the refinement of teaching in guided reading lessons, bringing together the romance in guided reading with the reality of its depth.’
