CyberBullying Digital Generation K.Cogan

Cyberbullying  The use of information technology to repeatedly and deliberately harm or harass other people  According to U.S. Legal Definitions, Cyberbullying could be:  posting rumors or gossip  Name Calling  Physical Threat  Stalking  Sexual Harassment  Impersonation  defaming and humiliation  Can be done by text, , phone, picture or video clip.

It’s not just Bullying- it’s criminal!  Defamation  If the libel lawsuit is successful, the person making the statement will have to pay damages (money) to the target. If the defamation is treated as a crime in criminal court, it can be punishable up to 5 years in prison.  Creating an unsafe environment by making the target feel that she or he cannot go to school without facing violence, teasing or exclusion  Schools and workplaces are required to provide a safe environment for their students or employees, and must take any appropriate action to do so. A school, therefore, might punish a student for online behavior that is making it hard for other students to learn in a safe environment. A school or workplace that does not do everything it can to provide a safe environment can be sued by the target(s). Even if a statement is not libelous, spreading it around might still create an unsafe environment.  A person is responsible for any consequences that he or she might reasonably have guessed would happen  Therefore, a person who is cyberbullying who suggests that a depressed student should kill herself would be liable if the student actually did kill herself, as long as the person who was cyberbullying had reason to believe it was a likely result.  Harassment is a crime  Harassment is when something a person says or does makes someone fear for his or her safety, or for the safety of others. Even if the perpetrator did not intend to frighten someone, she or he can be charged with harassment if the target feels threatened. Criminal harassment is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Statistics  81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person  Only 1 in 10 victims will inform someone of their abuse  About 75% of students admit they have visited a website that has bashed another student.  Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online.

Cyberbullying & Suicide  According to the CDC  Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people with approximately 4,400 deaths every year.  there are at least 100 suicide attempts for every suicide among young people.  Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide  Facebook ads new suicide prevention toolsFacebook ads new suicide prevention tools  Burnbook Burnbook

Friday Night Lights  Friday Night Lights Friday Night Lights Are actions in an online community (like the slurs on the website) different than actions taken offline (like the notes left on Lyla’s locker at the school)? Why, or why not? How are anonymous actions – like posting on a website or leaving a note – different from things done face-to-face? Imagine you were a bystander at this school, watching this situation unfold. What do you think you would have done? Do bystanders have a responsibility to do anything? What should you think about before you post anything about another person online, in an instant message, text, or any other kind of digital message? Have you ever seen a picture of a friend with some nasty comments? What did you do? Aside from a target, who else can be impacted by online cruelty? Who else could be involved, directly or indirectly?
