Presentation transcript:

Geomatics – what is it? Geomatics is the discipline of gathering, storing, processing, and delivering geographic information, or spatially referenced information. It includes the tools and techniques used in land surveying, remote sensing, cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), photogrammetry, geography and related forms of earth mapping. It heavily relies upon Computer Science and ICT (Information and Communication Technology)

Geomatics – what is it? Application areas include: Agriculture Air navigation services Archaeology Coastal zone management and mapping Climate Change/Environmental Monitoring Criminology Disaster risk reduction and response Environment Infrastructure management Land management and reform Meteorology Natural resource monitoring and development Oceanography Sociology Urban planning...and many others

Our programme This Course will try: to cover a little bit of –Computer and software –Geodesy and cartography –Remote Sensing –Image Interpretation –GIS and Mapping to show their applications to land resources mapping and evaluation and to demonstrate the practical use of Open Source software tools

Our programme Textbook: Mario Gomarasca Basics of Geomatics Springer 2009

Additional readings: Principles of Geographic Information Systems: an introductory textbook By O. Huisman (editor) and R.A. de By (editor) Enschede, ITC, 2009 Principles of Remote Sensing: an introductory textbook By K. Tempfli (editor), G.C. Huurneman (editor), and others Enschede, ITC, unfortunately, these two books cannot be printed... Our programme
