What did Christopher Vogler, author of The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, say about the connection between the heroic journey and writing? Right now, Melissa is wondering who watched the videos, completed The Kaplan Guide to Successful Writing readings, and took notes.

Standard English and Formal Writing What is Standard English and why do we need to use Standard English in our writing? Formal and Informal Writing– What is the difference? How can we make our writing more formal? Webster’s dictionary defines ‘amulet’ as… vs. Joseph Campbell in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, defines ‘amulet’ as…

What is concise writing? Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell. — William Strunk Jr. in Elements of Style Make all your words work!

Ways to do this Getting rid of redundancy in writing--- Instead of “12 midnight”, use “midnight” Instead of “end result” use “result” Instead of “cooperate together” use “cooperate.”

Trimming sentences further Reducing Clauses to Phrases, Phrases to Single Words– Example: Citizens who knew what was going on voted him out of office. Knowledgeable citizens voted him out of office.

Phrases you can omit As far as I'm concerned, there is no need for further protection of woodlands. Write instead: Further protection of woodlands is not needed. Omit phrases like “at the present time,” “ as a matter of fact.”

Practice in Concise Writing How would you reword these sentences: If Julia does not keep her job, it will be due to the fact that she has not arrived on time every single day.

Practice in Concise Writing If Julia loses her job, it's because she's always late. Next: Jerome is a writer who has plenty of ideas and not enough time in his daily activity to allow him to write.

Practice in Concise Writing While Jerome has ideas, he has no time to write. Next: Protecting our children while they research on the Internet is an activity which can take a lot of time and attention to achieve.

Practice in Concise Writing Successfully protecting children while they do Internet research can be time- consuming. Next: The person with the purple hair left a car in the parking lot of the mall.

Practice in Concise Writing The purple-haired person parked a car in the mall's lot. Next: We left the keys on the table of the house owned by our boss.

Practice in Concise Writing We left the keys on our boss's table.

This Week’s Work: Discussion Board: You will need to identify a charitable or volunteer organization that could benefit from your help. Once you identify this organization, please do the following: Provide a summary of the group’s goals and programs. Explain/Illustrate how this organization could be an “elixir” or “amulet” to one person’s life. Explain what factors should encourage someone to volunteer in his or her own community. Don’t forget to provide a source citation for any information from websites.
