16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 1 Climatic Chamber & Testbench

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 2 Climatic Chamber & Testbench  Project history Why a Climatic Chamber? Previous facility Present needs  New project description Principles Testbench Climatic Chamber oUpgrade the old one… oOr buy a new one

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 3 Why?  3 Climatic chambers in the group since 1976  All the materials rented by the pool have been tested in temperature: components, power supplies, modules (Fastbus, Camac, Nim, Vme) Ageing (fast temperature variations) – often for components Burn-in (high temperature tests) Performance evolution with temperature – ex: ADCs linearity Integrated in the climatic chamber by the group: voltage variation for VME and Fastbus modules on custom backplanes

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 4 Previous facility camac nim VME 6U Crate VME 6U With custom backplane Temperature control panel (manual) Voltage control panel (manual) Power Supplies Fastbus crate with custom backplane Climatic Chamber (Heraeus 1986)

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 5 Present needs  Climatic Chamber New custom boards created for LHC to be tested New form factor 9U VME 64x Temperature & voltage remote control needed Refrigerant to be changed  Testbench New remote power supply crates Better understand the dynamic behavior of custom VME boards (HARP)

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 6 New project principles Provide a general facility available TO ALL: Development groups, users, … And for ALL TYPES of equipment: Components, electronic boards, power supplies, …

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 7 New project principles CAMAC Crate NIM Crate VME 9U 64x Crate with remote power supply 6U VME Crate Oscilloscope Rack -dynamic & static current measurement of the crate and of individual vme modules -current variations generation on the backplane Control PC or/& Terminal PC with ethernet PCI-MXI interface Windows/unix Labview Visual C++ - Climatic Chamber control -VME & Camac control - results analysis  Canbus & profibus controller Temperature variation zone Power supply variation zone Fixed power supplies zones Climatic Chamber -Temperature tests -Power supply variation tests 9U 64x VME Crate with cut power supply lines  Complete rack, equipped with CAMAC, NIM, remote power supply, PC and terminal  temperature tests for all electronics  VME module tests in varying conditions  Temperature variations (Climatic Chamber)  Power supply voltage variation (Climatic Chamber)  Current variations on the backplane  Measurement of static and dynamic current of a VME crate/ module

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 8 New testbench camac nim 9U VME Crate 64x with remote power supply Current probes measuring dynamic & static current used by the crate Interface load-backplane to generate current variations (simulate modules activity) Power supply remotely mounted oscillo Oscilloscope with GPIB interface to read back the current measurement results

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 9 Chamber modification  keep the old one… Replace the old 6U crate by a VME 9U 64x custom crate Add DAC modules to control remotely the temperature Change the refrigerant Remove the voltage control panel Change power supplies with new Wiener power supplies (with canbus) Remove the Fastbus crate

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 10 Chamber modification  …or buy a new one add a VME 9U 64x custom crate add Wiener power supplies (with canbus)

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 11 Chamber modification  Upgrade the current one New climatic chamber28000 chf Insert new backplane (home made with advices from the company) 500 chf +manpower Remote control of the temperature - Remote control of the power supplies 2000 chf +manpower TOTAL30500 chf +manpower  Buy a new one Change refrigerant (ext. company) 3500 chf Insert new backplane (home made) 500 chf +manpower Remote control of the temperature 4000 chf +manpower Remote control of the power supplies 2000 chf +manpower TOTAL10000 chf +manpower

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 12 Chamber modification  Upgrade the old one Material 20 years old Remote interface for temperature control => ESS Refrigerant change => external company Investment: 10000chf + manpower Useful volume: 660x630x600 =>VME modules and small components only  Buy a new one New material Remote interface for temperature control integrated Refrigerant ok Investment: chf + manpower Useful volume: 710x590x1250 =>VME & all other modules allowed

16/05/03Climatic Chamber & Testbench - Sophie Baron 13 Conclusion  Environmental testing facilities must be provided to designers  What type of electronics do you need to test?  Which type of chamber do you need? or ?
