Early years Born August 3, 1926 as Anthony Dominick Benedetto His father died when Tony was 10 He grew up in Queens, a borough of New York City He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan His early passions were singing, painting, and music

His big break The first time he sang in a nightclub was in 1946 at Shangri-La in Astoria His big break came in 1949 when Bob Hope noticed him Tony recalls, ““Bob Hope came down to check out my act. He liked my singing so much that after the show he came back to see me in my dressing room and said, ‘Come on kid, you're going to come to the Paramount and sing with me.’ But first he told me he didn't care for my stage name (Joe Bari) and asked me what my real name was. I told him, ‘My name is Anthony Dominick Benedetto’ and he said, ‘We’ll call you Tony Bennett.’ And that's how it happened. A new Americanized name—the start of a wonderful career and a glorious adventure that has continued for over 60 years.” 1

Musical Style In an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal, Tony Bennett said: I'm not staying contemporary for the big record companies, I don't follow the latest fashions. I never sing a song that's badly written. In the 1920s and '30s, there was a renaissance in music that was the equivalent of the artistic Renaissance. Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and others just created the best songs that had ever been written. These are classics, and finally they're not being treated as light entertainment. This is classical music. (Clodfelter, 2010)

Musical Style Continued Bennett’s style is “classic” pop music He sings about love His songs have a slow tempo and conjunct (moving slowly between pitches) He sings with a homophonic texture He uses strings in his instrumentals
