Chapter 1 Living Things Need Energy
Lesson 1 Terms Photosynthesis – the process by which plants make their own food Solar energy – energy from the sun Stomata – tiny holes on leaves that collect carbon dioxide Environment – everything that surrounds a living thing
Lesson 2 Terms Food chain – shows how energy passes from one organism to another Producers – organisms that make their own food (all plants) Consumers – organisms that must eat food for energy (all animals) Decomposers – organisms that break down once living things Herbivore – consumers that eat mostly plants Carnivores – consumers that eat mostly animals Omnivores – consumers that eats both plants and animals
Lesson 3 Terms Food web – shows how a group of food chains are linked together Competition – when several organisms want the same resource (usually food) Population – all the members of a single type of organism
Lesson 4 Terms Microorganism – living things too small to be seen with just our eyes Bacteria – smallest type of microorganism without nuclei Protists – microorganisms that live in water and are larger than bacteria Fungi – plant-like organism that breaks down once living things
Concepts 1 Be able to describe the three major parts that plants have that assist with photosynthesis Roots – collect water and nutrients Stem – transport resources and sunlight Leaves – collect carbon dioxide and sunlight Be able to describe the difference between producers and consumers and give an example of each Plants such as rosebushes are producers that make their own food Animals such as lions are consumers that eat food
Concepts 2 Be able to chart an example of a food chain with at least 4 members such as: Sun – tree – monkey – cheetah - earthworms Be able to describe at least two ways a food web could be changed or disrupted such as: Fire destroy trees, hunting animals to extinction, adding animals to an environment, diseases, droughts Be able to explain why algae is plant-like, an amoeba is animal-like, and euglena is like both
Have in mind A specific type of organism of any type (plant, animal, fungi, etc.) and be able to give three details about it. Some organisms we discussed in class were: Rabbits, horn toads, water bears Tickle-me plants, pitcher plants, Venus fly traps Mushrooms Algae, amoeba, euglena
