ANDROID & KINDLE FIRE ▪ Using your Android tablet ▪ Using the Kindle Fire tablet
HOW TO USE YOUR ANDROID TABLET ▪ Android tablets are digital slates running the Android operating system. ▪ They can be used for multiple purposes like: checking s, playing games, watching videos, and listening to music. ▪ It can also be used as a camera or camcorder. ▪ However, an Android tablet is a bit different from an Android phone. ▪ Not only is the form-factor different, the user-interface is different too.
SET UP YOUR ANDROID TABLET ▪ You'll need a Google account to download apps via the Google Play Store.
UNDERSTAND THE HOME BUTTON ▪ This is used to jump to the home screen of your Android device. ▪ If pressed in between another activity (game, or application), the OS puts the activity in the background. ▪ Using this button will, usually, not shut down any application or game; instead, it will run in the background.
UNDERSTAND THE BACK BUTTON ▪ This is used to go to the previous page or activity.
UNDERSTAND THE MULTI-TASKING BUTTON ▪ Android tablets running Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and higher will have a multi-tasking button (parallelogram-shaped button). ▪ Tapping this button will give a list of all applications running in the background. ▪ Swiping a running application to the left or right (in the multi-task screen) will close the application. ▪ This is particularly useful to clear RAM and speed up the device.
UNDERSTAND OLDER ANDROID TABLETS ▪ Older Android tablets may have a Menu (or settings) button (represented by three parallel horizontal lines). ▪ This button gives the user access to additional options for particular apps. ▪ This button is not found on devices running Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean out of the box.
CHECK THE VERSION OF YOUR ANDROID TABLET ▪ Different tablets run on different versions of the Android OS. ▪ The Android version can be found in the About Tablet section of the settings panel. ▪ Most tablets run on Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or higher. ▪ The latest version of Android is Lollipop (5.0.x). ▪ Generally, the higher the version of Android, better will be the device performance. ▪ Some older tablets run on Android Honeycomb (3.x). ▪ Honeycomb was a tablet-specific version which wasn't available for mobile phones running on Android. ▪ The OS version gives a brief idea of the features packed in a tablet.

DOWNLOAD APPLICATIONS/PROGRAMS ▪ Google Play Store has a vast collection of tools, applications and games that will make your Android experience much better. ▪ Download an office app that will help you view and/ or edit documents. ▪ Most Android tablets come with an in-built document viewer. ▪ If you want to download a free office editor for Android, try downloading the Kingsoft Office application. ▪ Try using your Android device to take notes, add calendar events and get directions. ▪ It can be used for various other activities too.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR ANDROID ▪ Customize your Android. Google's open source Android OS gives you the power to customize your device. ▪ Make custom Android smart actions. ▪ Setting up smart actions will carry out specific activities when specific conditions are met. ▪ Smart actions can be customized to suit your needs ▪ Note: Smart actions may not be available on all devices. However, you can download similar apps from the Google Play Store. ▪ Adjust Screen Timeout. ▪ The screen timeout time can be a drain on the battery, especially if it is too long. ▪ Setting up a screen timeout is the one of the best ways to save power while your tablet is on. ▪ Create your own wallpapers, widgets, etc.
SPEED UP YOUR DEVICE ▪ Speeding up your device can be done in a number of ways: ▪ Update your version/ firmware. ▪ Device manufacturers roll out updates occasionally to fix bugs, reduce lags, and improve performance. Be on the look out for updates for your device. ▪ Download a task-killer and anti-virus applications. ▪ Some devices come with an in-built task manager while most don't. ▪ Task manager will allow you to close the apps that are running in the background (and use up RAM). ▪ Anti-virus application will keep you safe from any external threats. ▪ Remove unneeded widgets from the home screen. ▪ Widgets are useful to quickly access important apps or get information. ▪ However, unneeded widgets use up a lot of processing power and will slow down your tablet.
CONFIGURE SYNC OPTIONS ▪ Syncing is an efficient way to transfer data like pictures, videos, contacts, messages, s, and more, between many devices (including your PC). ▪ To configure synchronization options for apps or accounts, go to Settings -> Accounts & sync. ▪ Sync your Gmail s, contacts, calendar with Windows Outlook or other accounts. ▪ Set up Gmail in Microsoft Outlook. ▪ Set the server type to IMAP. Set the incoming mail server to imap.gmail.com and outgoing mail server to smtp.gmail.com. ▪ Enter log-in information (Gmail username and password). ▪ Under "More Settings", open the Advanced tab. ▪ Set incoming server to 933 with SSL encryption and your outgoing server to 587 with TLS encryption. ▪ Set up Gmail in Mozilla Thunderbird. ▪ Mozilla Thunderbird is a cross-platform open-source client. ▪ To set up Gmail in Thunderbird, first, enable IMAP in your Google account settings. ▪ Open Thunderbird and go to Tools -> Account Settings. ▪ Add a new mail account; and input your name, -address and password. Thunderbird will automatically try to configure your Gmail account for Thunderbird.
BACK UP YOUR DATA ▪ Back up your data to your computer, mobile phone or an external storage. ▪ You can also try backing up on the Google Cloud.
TIPS ▪ Try downloading a file manager that will allow you to access external storage easily. ▪ Switching off your device completely will clear temporary data and the device will run faster. ▪ Set up a pattern lock for additional security. ▪ To set this up, go to Settings > Location & Security
KINDLE FIRE ▪ Kindle Fire is a larger version of Amazon's popular Kindle reader. ▪ It's similar to an iPad in that it supports multi-touch and rotation, plus unlike the Kindle, it's features a full-color screen. ▪ Kindles can be a little tricky at first, but we will give you some tips on how to use on

POWER UP YOUR KINDLE FIRE ▪ To turn your Kindle Fire on, press the small circular button at the bottom. ▪ Press and hold the button again to turn it off. ▪ On other Kindle Fire models the power switch is at the top.
SIGN INTO YOUR KINDLE FIRE ▪ To fully use all the features of the Kindle Fire, you must register it to your Amazon account. ▪ Before you register, you can connect to a Wi-Fi network by tapping the Quick Settings icon (the little gear icon) at the top of the screen, then selecting Wi-Fi. ▪ Choose your network, then tap the Quick Settings icon again, tap More, and choose the My Account option to register.

SHOPPING FOR TITLES ▪ Amazon offers a wide selection of books, newspapers, magazines, applications, music, movies, and TV shows for your Kindle Fire. ▪ To go to the store, tap the Store link in the top right corner of any Content library. ▪ To leave the store and return to your Content library, tap Library.
HOME SCREEN ▪ Search option ▪ Tap the search and a virtual keyboard appears at the bottom of the screen ▪ Search for books, music, Amazon, newspaper, gaming… ▪ Carousal items ▪ Used to display your recently viewed content including books, web pages, music, videos and more. ▪ To delete an item from the carousel press and hold ▪ Remove from home ▪ Remove from device ▪ Recent ▪ Displays recent items you are reading, listening, shopped… ▪ Home ▪ Shows the last 4 books or other items + various apps available + Amazon shopping + camera + Amazon photos.. ▪ Books ▪ Shows all books you’ve downloaded as well as Amazon recommended books ▪ Video ▪ Available videos

NOTIFICATIONS ▪ At the top of the screen on your Kindle Fire, next to the name of it, you might see a number (1, 2…) contained in a small circle ▪ This is a notification of some sore that the Kindle Fire is telling you about. ▪ Drag down the top bar where the number appears and the notification area will expand to give you more details about the notifictions.
POWER, CHARGING, AND BATTERY METER ▪ Hard reset ▪ Pressing and holding the power button until it shuts off ▪ 20 to 30 seconds ▪ Wait 1 minute ▪ Press and hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it back on ▪ Charging ▪ Charge your Kindle regularly especially if you watch movies or play music ▪ Reducing the volume and brightness through the controls in settings will help conserve battery life ▪ Battery Meter ▪ View the total battery life remaining by pulling down the status bar

BROWSER NAVIGATION ▪ Make sure your connected to WiFi ▪ Type in the URL ▪ (example) ▪ Virtual keyboard will display ▪ Press the magnifying glass icon to the left ▪ You can have multiple tabs open ▪ Move from tab to tab, tap on the tab you wish ▪ Top left corner ▪ Back, home, bookmark, and menu (3 vertical dots) ▪ Range of settings and options appear for the menu.

BOOK READING ▪ Access book section ▪ Home Screen > Tap Books ▪ Will show all your Kindle books in your library ▪ New e-books for Kindle through Amazon ▪ Make sure WiFi is active ▪ Click on Store icon on the right side ▪ Browse categories ▪ Kindle book deals ▪ Kindle daily deals ▪ Books and audio books cannot be transferred to the SD card
MUSIC & VIDEOS ▪ Click on Music on home page ▪ Will display music downloaded ▪ Click on Shop icon to purchase music from Amazon ▪ Will display prime playlists ▪ Display top prime albums ▪ Tapping on the music album will start playing ▪ If you hit the home button, the music will continue to play but a notification will appear ▪ Tap on this and will take back to music ▪ Tap on Video ▪ Displays video from prime originals and exclusives to new release movies ▪ Click on Store to purchase or download videos
APPS ▪ All apps are displayed on your home screen ▪ May need to swipe down to view others ▪ Can download apps ▪ Click on AppStore ▪ Click on the magnifying glass to search for apps ▪ Click on the box with small squares to view apps by category ▪ Tap on the app ▪ Tap download (free) ▪ Will install on your device ▪ Associated with your Amazon account
NEWSTAND & AUDIOBOOKS ▪ Newstand will display magazines and newspapers available to you. ▪ Washington Post subscription is free ▪ Get it twice a day ▪ Audiobooks ▪ Click on store icon to view audiobooks to download from Amazon
PHYSICAL CARE TABLETS ▪ Food & Drink ▪ Don’t eat or drink near your Kindle as any drinks or food spilled on it could cause harm. ▪ Cleaning the Screen & Body ▪ Try to get a screen protect to keep down scratches ▪ Clean with a microfiber cloth ▪ Turn off the tablet prior to cleaning ▪ Use the same cloth to clean the rest of the tablet ▪ Watch temperature ▪ When you watch videos or play games on the tablet, it will get warm ▪ No cooling fans like a laptop or computer ▪ Space around it to cool down ▪ Don’t put it in direct sunlight
