Dixon Unified School District Check for Understanding With Whole Class/Group Response By Robyn Fulgham

Definition of Checking for Understanding CFU is when a teacher continually verifies that students are learning what is being taught while it is being taught

Why Do We Check for Understanding? To ensure students are learning the material. To decide on the pace of the lesson. To review or clarify before students are working independently. To allow students to process the information in smaller chunks. To allow students to move and talk to allow for higher engagement.

Keys to Checking for Understanding Use each time you teach something new (3-4 minutes) Conduct during and after the lesson Use different methods to assess (multiple modalities) Use to guide instruction Allows students to prove their mastery and learn from others

How do you check for whole group understanding in your classroom? Share 1 or more methods with a partner. We will share out in 2 minutes.

Types of Checking for Understanding with Whole Group Responses Quick responses throughout or at end of the whole group lesson  Choral Response  Vocal student response to a teacher question or phrase  Gestures  Whiteboards – individual answers  Exit Tickets  Yes/No

Gestures Numbers Talk with Erica Burnison
