Reminders Talk in English during all activities inside the class. Don’t answer the questions if you haven’t been asked. Don’t shout the answers.

For each row, determine which side is correct The computer is able to store 2000 images. The computer’s store capacity is of 200 GB That file weights more than the 3MB that Churchillnet allows for attachments. The computer is able to storage 2000 images. The computer’s storage capacity is of 200 GB That file size is 3MB, more than whatChurchillnet allows for attachments.

Learning Objectives All students will be able to identify the different measure units used for storage devices. Most students will be able to state each storage measure units in terms of files. Some students will be able to explain the importance of knowing the measure units.

Storage measurement units What is bigger 10 or 100? What is bigger 10 TB or 100 EB? Is it just enough that you know that 1 EB = 1000 PB?

Storage Measurement Units The basic measure unit used to measure stored data in a computer is a byte. Bytes are also the smallest unit used and they represent one single character in a text file. Any text document that has more than 1000 characters or more than 200 words aprox. will become a 1 KiloByte file.

Storage Measurement Units 1 Kilobyte (KB) is 1000 bytes What do we measure in KB?

Storage Measurement Units 1 Megabyte (MB) is 1000 Kilobytes What do we normally measure in MBs?

Storage Measurement Units 1 Gigabyte (GB) is 1000 Megabytes What do we normally measure in GBs?

Storage Measurement Units 1 Terabyte (TB) is 1000 Gigabytes What device(s) has a storage capacity of at least 1 TB?

Storage Measurement Units 1 Petabyte (PB) is 1000 Terabytes 1PB = 13 Years of HD-TV Videos 20 PB = The amount of data processed by Google in one day.

Storage Measurement Units 1 Exabyte (EB) is 1000 Petabytes 500 Exabytes = All contents from the Internet (www)

Storage Measurement Units 1 Zettabyte (ZB) is 1000 Exabytes 1 Yottabyte (YB) is 1000 Zettabytes

Rainbow Group Work Each group will be given a table. Each row has a description of an specific measure unit. Write in the space provide the measure unit that fits with the description. (3 minutes) Failure to complete the task in the given time will mean extra homework. Red: Fernando A, Mariana L, Karina, Emilio Green: Fernanda, Alexa, Mateo, Jimena Blue: Aldo, Fernando G, Mariana C, Jessica Yellow: MaJo, Frida, Arturo, Rafael

Rainbows Inside the new teams, all members will discuss their results generated in the previous step and will try to reach a unified conclusion. (2 minutes) Failure to complete the task in the given time will mean extra homework. Rainbow 1: Fernando A, Alexa, Fernando G, Frida Rainbow 2: Fernanda, Mariana L, Mariana C, Arturo Rainbow 3: Aldo, Karina, Mateo, Rafael Rainbow 4: MaJo, Emilio, Jimena, Jessica

Table: Name (Acronym) Measurement unit is used for the following: Megabyte (MB)The size of an MP3 file. Gigabyte (GB)The size of a DVD movie. Megabyte (MB)The size of a Power Point document. Gigabyte (GB) The size of the storage capacity of an smartphone. Terabyte (TB) The size of the storage capacity of the computers in ITLAB (25) Byte (B) The size of a text file with the message “HELLO”. Kilobyte (KB) The size of a text file with two complete poems Exabyte (EB)The size of all the Internet Yottabyte (YB)The biggest size of them all.

Now is your turn to show what you know. Individually you will answer a small quiz. The main purpose of this activity is so you can know where you need to improve. (5 minutes)

Quiz answers 1. Storage 2. Store 3. Weight 4. GB 5. MB 6. PB 7. KB

Quiz Markscheme Explain 1 marks: A limited response that indicates very little understanding of the topic. 2-3 marks: A reasonable description of how the measurement units are used. Reasons are missing or not enough detailed. 4 A clear detailed explanation (with reasons) of why the measurement units are important.

Reasons Can be fooled by someone telling you the computer has 1000 MB of RAM and sound a big number. Can make a bad purchase if you think 100 GB is enough to download all your movies. Can have trouble with CC or s when trying to send an attached file. Couldn’t differentiate between 10MB or 10 GB.

Medal and Goal example. Give mark from 1 to 4 according to the markscheme Medal: Write a comment of something that your peer has done correctly in the explanation. Ex: You have correctly described the importance of measurment units. Goal: Write a comment of something your peer need to correct or work on to have a better grade. Ex: When explaining you need to include reasons in your answer.
