PREPOSITIONS OF TIME

What types of prepositions do you know?  Prepositions of place Ex: He was standing in front of the open door  Prepositions of movement and direction Ex: We walked along the river.  Prepositions of cause and purpose Ex: The tornado grew because of the thunderstorm  Prepositions of manner Ex: I went with my husband Prepositions of time Prepositions of time Ex: I asked him to do it when he came.

IN  with parts of the day (in the morning)  в значении «через» (in a month)  with names of months (in May)  with names of seasons (in summer)  with years (in 1987)  With centuries (in the 20 th century)

ON  with names of the days of the week (on Monday)  with calendar dates (on February 12th, 2013)  with “special” dates (on my birthday)

AT  with specific time of the day (at noon, at night)  with precise time (at 5 o’clock)  with the word “weekend” (at the weekend)  with the names of public holidays (at Christmas, at Easter)  With the word “night” (at night)

BUT: THERE IS NO preposition with expressions last, this, next, before, yesterday, today, tonight, tomorrow, every Ex: Last week I met him in Moscow. Last year I moved to Kazan. What are you doing tomorrow evening?

Other prepositions of time At the end Ex: At the end of the film John felt very bored. Until and till Ex: We didn’t have dinner until father arrived. Ago Ex: This novel was published 2 months ago. From…to Ex: He was reading from 5 to 7 o’clock. For Ex: I haven’t seen my best friend for many years. Since Ex: We haven’t met each other since childhood. During Ex: They were talking during the lecture.
