Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 14–4) Main Idea Example 1:Problem-Solving Strategy

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will solve problems by making a model.

Example 1 Nick is helping his younger sister put away her alphabet blocks. She has already put away one layer of blocks. To fill up one layer it takes nine blocks. If the box is filled with six layers of blocks, how many blocks would be in the box?

Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? The number of cubes in one layer of a box. The number of layers in the box. What do you need to find? The number of cubes in the box when there are six layers.

Example 1 Plan Solve the problem by making a model.

Example 1 Solve Use your plan to solve the problem. Continue stacking the cubes until there are six layers. Make a model of one layer of the box by arranging 9 cubes in a 3 × 3 array.

Example 1 Solve Answer: There are a total of 54 cubes. So, the box would have 54 cubes.

Example 1 Check Look back at the problem. Use logical reasoning and multiplication. There are 6 layers and each layer had 9 cubes. So, the total number of cubes is 6 × 9 or 54. The answer is correct.
