AGE OF EXPLORATION Nathan Gilson 7 th Grade Social Studies

Navigation Noun The ability to use charts, maps, and instruments to accurately move from one place to a destination. The satallite navigation device in my car was broken, so I had to use a map instead.

Astrolabe Noun An instrument used by navigators to determine latitude and longitude by using star and planet positions. Without their astrolabes, most explorers would have been lost and unable to navigate the Atlantic ocean

Indigenous Adjective The people who were first in an area. The original occupants of a place. The indigenous people were surprised to see Europeans since they had never seen anything like them before.

Cartography Noun The study of making accurate maps. It wasn’t until a cartographer looked at where Columbus was sailing that he realized that it was a New World.

Conquistadores Noun The name given to the Spanish explorers who were coming to the new world. Most often were soldiers. The Conquistadores were after the indigenous peoples’ gold, and as a result were often very cruel to them.

Colonialism Noun The belief that a mother country should try to establish colonies to benefit the country. Colonialism lead to the European settlement of North and South America, and helps explain why most people in America have connections to Europe or Africa.

Mercantilism Noun An economic and foreign policy belief that controlling trade is vital to national security. Many private pirates, called privateers, were hired by kings to raid other countries’ ships because of the mercantile system of the 1600’s.

East India Trading Company Proper Noun The British-based company that began to control all trade from India and the New World to and from Europe. The East India Trading Company had a monopoly on foreign goods like tea and sugar during the 17 th and 18 th century.

Circumnavigate Verb To navigate completely around an object, usually in reference to the planet. Magellan was the first man to circumnavigate the earth.
