Assessment practice will follow and reinforce the curriculum and promote high quality learning and teaching approaches. Assessment of children’s and young people’s progress and achievement during their broad general education to the end of S3 will be based on teachers’ assessment of their knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and capabilities, as described in the experiences and outcomes across the curriculum. Building the Curriculum 5: A Framework for Assessment

I can collect like algebraic terms, simplify expressions and evaluate using substitution. MTH 3-14a Task 1 – Round Robin Substitution Tarsia

Make a date at 3,6,9 and 12 o’clock

Having explored the Distributive Law in a practical context, I can simplify, multiply and evaluate simple algebraic terms involving a bracket. MTH 4-14a Task 2 – Mix Pair Challenge Rally Coach Multiplying out bracketsRally Coach

Commutative, Associative & Distributive Laws Commutative Law a + b = b + a a × b = b × a Associative Law a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c (a × b) × c = a × (b × c) Distributive Law a (b + c) = a × b + a × c = ab + ac

Task 2 “Make a date Challenge” Rally coach Academic Task : Multiplying brackets by a number Multiplying brackets by a letter Challenging/helping my partners Social Skills :Using encouraging phrases Checking for understanding Example of material

Learners make their own distinct ‘flash cards’ (algebraic expression with brackets on one side and the expanded version without brackets on the reverse) use small post-it notes Number the pupils 1 to 4, get 1’s and 2’s to form a circle facing out, then numbers 3 and 4 form a circle facing inwards Everyone should have a partner that they are facing. Outside partner shows their question to partner and partner solves, then inside partner does the same. These partners then swap questions and the outside circle moves around one place and the same thing happens again. Learners may explain to each other HOW to multiply out the brackets to give the answer on the reverse of the ‘flash card’. Task 2a “Inside/outside circle”

Learners can choose to extend this task by offering their partner the algebraic expression without brackets and asking them to give the corresponding algebraic expression with brackets. Task 2a – extension

Thank your partner, return to your ‘family’

Academic Task : Solve equations by writing out each stage accurately Social Skills :To try my best and work neatly To check each other’s work and correct with kindness if necessary Task 3 “Simultaneous Rotate & Check”

Task 3 equations Solve: A. 3x + 2 = 5x - 8 B. 4x - 6 = 2x + 8 C. 6x - 7 = 3x + 2 D. 10x - 12 = 7x + 3 Write out the equation, rotate jotters, start the first line of the solution, rotate jotters on the new jotter write out the next stage of the solution, rotate jotters, check the previous working in the next new jotter and continue rotating jotters after each line of working until a solution is reached

Working in teams of 4, learners follow instructions: Write out the equation, rotate jotters, start the first line of the solution, rotate jotters on the new jotter write out the next stage of the solution, rotate jotters, check the previous working in the next new jotter and continue rotating jotters after each line of working until a solution is reached By working in this manner, pupils support each other as needed, stopping to discuss differences when necessary and giving encouragement and positive feedback throughout. Possible Evidence = Photograph or short video clip or pupils can initial their lines in a solution Task 3 “Simultaneous Rotate & Check”

Academic Task : Express fractions in equivalent forms Sharing solutions Discussing solutions Agreeing on the best solution Social Skills :Using encouraging phrases Reaching consensus Task 4 - “Show-Me-Boards”

In teams of 4, all pupils answer a given question simultaneously on their board and share their solutions with their team. If needed they then discuss and agree on the correct solution and this is presented as the team’s response. (This can be done repeatedly to check for understanding and correct misunderstandings within the group. Teacher’s role is usually observational. This is used as checking or for revision once the ideas have been taught) Evidence = Audio, Video & Photographic Task 4 - “Show-Me-Boards”

Task 5 “Walk About Talk About” Academic Task : Identifying 3 figure bearings correctly Sharing my solution with others Discussing my thinking / understanding Agreeing on the best solution Social Skills :Listening attentively Check for Understanding Correcting with kindness

Learners follow instructions to write out their solution to the given bearings questions on a show-me board or in their jotters. Learners are then instructed to meet up with 5 different people out-with their group (from ‘Make a date’). Each pair compare solutions, discuss if different and agree on the best solution as appropriate. Learners copy their final version into their jotters. Timing should be managed by teacher for changing partners – suggest 2 min max per question.Make a date Evidence = Short Video Clips & Photographic Task 5 “Walk About Talk About”

Activity 5 : “Speed Dating” Academic Task : I Can Evaluate Algebraic Expressions I Can Share My Solutions I Can Discuss All Solutions I Can Agree On The Best Solution Social Skills :To Reach Consensus To Use Good Meeting & Greeting

Academic Task : I Can “Thought Shower” My Ideas For Each Topic Header Social Skills :To Work In Silence To Stay With My Team Activity 6 : “Graffiti Boards”

Preparation Homework Task – Learners had to ask an adult or use the internet or read books to find out why we use Algebra in the world today? Working in teams of 3 or 4 Learners contributed to Grafitti Boards to write down what information they discovered. Evidence = Photographic Activity 6 : “Graffiti Boards”
