2 Objectives At the end of this exercise, you will be able to:

3 Describe the Peltier effect. Describe how a regular air conditioner works.

4 About This Presentation Our personal comfort is usually very important to us. In this presentation we’ll look at various ways we can cool ourselves.

5 Natural Cooling … One form of cooling is to stop using so much energy. If you want to cool a room, this principle will help there too. Don’t use so much energy.

6 Get away from the heat source. This works for your house too. Open a window if necessary.

7 Be on the breezy side of the house when outside. Open the windows and let the air flow through. Put fans in the windows and attic. Turn on the furnace blower. But what about misting and cooling towers?

18 Thermoelectricity Thermoelectricity is the direct conversion of heat into electric energy. Joule’s Law - The relationship between the flow of current through a resistance and the heat dissipated.

19 Thermocouple – A closed loop formed by joining the ends of two strips of dissimilar metals, and if the two junctions of the metals are at different temperatures, an electromotive force, or voltage, is created that is proportional to the temperature difference between the junctions.
