Upper School groups 4-7

 Main approaches aim to:  Integrate children socially and emotionally  Use cross curriculum IPC themes to practice language  Team teach literacy lessons in guided Reading sessions

 Children in groups 4-7 have extra English lessons  Continuing children from the lower school are assisted on a support basis  New pupils are excused form taking Dutch lessons for one year and given a separate EAL programme

 As part of EAL support,  The EAL teachers schedule in- class assistance for the class teachers to assit in special tasks.  Small group work in the IPC is well suited  for differentiating the learning experience.

 Program contains activity based learning  Reinforces oral language skills  Uses a language development scheme and topics such as food, street, family, hobbies etc.  Individualized levels of emphasis based on developmental phase

 The listening and speaking curriculum, which indicates six developmental phases, is used to monitor children’s progress  Using the key indicators of each phase, the program is designed to emphasize and support literacy in conjunction with the classroom.

 Speaking and Listening  able to use controlled messages in  predictable exchanges  Vocabulary work: using pictures, books, object, toys, games, etc.  Practice simple sentences- role-play, talk about pictures  Asking questions and giving answers  Listening to classroom language  Games: following instructions

Guided Reading Teachers have been trained in The First Steps Reading Methods

A majority of staff have become certified in TESMC as a professional development course provided by two licensed staff members
