Council on Social Work Education | OUR PAST 2006: ¼ of masters programs offering some form of distance education and 19% offering at least one online course 2009: –41% BSW and 52% of MSW reported use of distance education technology in course delivery –21% indicated complete degree programs in the future
Council on Social Work Education | OUR PAST 2014 National Survey of 121 MSW Program Deans/Directors –68% (82) of MSW programs offered some type of distance education –66 offered one or more web-based courses –3 offered it totally online (60% or more) –19% said they were planning
Council on Social Work Education | CSWE Survey, BSW and 157 MSW 20 programs (5 BSW and 15 BSW) indicated it would be possible to earn a degree completely through technologically mediated instruction Most commonly used technologies: –Asynchronous internet-based –Synchronous internet-based –2-way interactive video –One-way pre-recorded video

Council on Social Work Education | PRESENT Since 2012, CSWE Annual Survey now asks whether you offer an online program leading to a social work degree at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral level We also maintain a list of programs offering online or distance education although it is not exhaustive. Representatives from accredited programs who have had their distance education components reviewed through either major change reports or reaffirmation review can have their programs added to the list

Steady growth of fully and partially online programs in social work education Potential of more than 50% of fully or partially online social work education programs in next year The majority of the programs are graduate programs (both masters and doctoral) Baccalaureate programs not growing as rapidy

Competency-based accreditation standards continue and more focus on assessing delivery methods that enhance attainment of competencies MOOCs and other distance education innovations may change the way courses and/or programs are delivered Need more data on the number of types of students, areas of specialized practice, types of distance education programs Other questions/thoughts????????????
