Attempts to break the blockade The blockade was held together by thousands of Union warships Some of these warships were nothing more than platforms with cannons There were several attempts to break the blockade with force but none succeeded Blockade Runners were men loyal to the Southern cause that would sneak through in order to get much needed supplies to the Confederacy Return to menu

Siege Both sides used their Naval forces to lay siege to forts and cities One of the most famous sieges of the war took place at Vicksburg, Mississippi where Union forces surrounded the city and bombed it for 47 days before they surrendered The Navy blocked off access to the city’s port and fired shells constantly Click here to learn about more uses of the Navy
