Abstinence and Refusal Skills In this lesson, you will Learn About… The importance of avoiding health risk behaviors. The benefits of abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. The benefits of abstinence from sexual activity. Effective ways to say no to risk behaviors.

Abstinence and Refusal Skills The Vocabulary term in this lesson is: Abstinence. Abstinence

Acting Responsibly Being free to make more decisions on your own is part of adolescence. However, with this new freedom comes increased responsibility for your actions.

Avoiding Risk Behaviors You may be pressured by your peers to use tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs or to engage in sexual activity. Recognizing that negative social influences can harm your health will help you respond appropriately to peer pressure and risk behaviors.

What Is Abstinence? When faced with pressure to engage in risk behaviors, stay safe by practicing abstinence. abstinence By abstaining from tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and sexual activity, you: Show self-respect. Protect yourself against many dangers associated with the use of these substances.

Abstinence from Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs Dangers associated with the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs include the following: Poor physical health Dependence Trouble with the law Inability to reach your goals

The Benefits of Abstinence from Sexual Activity Teens who abstain from sexual activity: Never have to worry about unplanned pregnancy. Will not be faced with difficult decisions that are associated with unplanned pregnancy, such as teen marriage, adoption, or abortion. Are free to enjoy being young. Do not have to worry about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) Are making choices that is always legal. It is illegal for unmarried minors to engage in sexual activity. Do not have to deal with the emotional consequences of sexual activity, which can include guilt, regret, and rejection.

The Benefits of Abstinence from Sexual Activity (cont’d.) Teens who abstain from sexual activity: Can establish nonsexual closeness with members of the opposite gender Can develop genuine feelings of love and trust. Can focus on setting and achieving their life goals and dreams.

Choosing Abstinence Abstinence from sexual activity protects against: A loss of self-esteem and the respect of others. B STDs, including HIV. C the physical and emotional risks of teen pregnancy. D legal consequences. Abstinence from the use of tobacco protects against: A loss of physical fitness. B damage to the body, especially the lungs and the heart. C dependency on nicotine. Abstinence from the use of alcohol and illegal drugs protects against: A the legal consequences of drug use and underage drinking. B nervous system injuries caused by alcohol and other drugs. C damage to the body, especially the nervous system, heart, and liver. D dependency on alcohol and drugs.

Effective Refusal Skills Practicing abstinence involves using effective refusal skills. An easy way to remember how to use refusal skills is S.T.O.P. Say no in a firm voice. Tell why not. Offer another idea. Promptly leave.
