Conferences At least one conference will be scheduled with all parents/guardians this year. Should you have concerns or questions, please contact your child’s teachers.

Students have received planners. These can be kept inside the binder and serve as a means of daily communication between home and school. *Signing your child’s planner nightly will help him/her be more responsible for homework.

Writing Test Fifth grade students will be given a state writing assessment in March. Students may receive any one of three writing topics requiring them to be prepared to write in informational, narrative, and persuasive genres. The assessment will assess informational, persuasive and narrative writing as defined by the Georgia Performance Standards. Students will be assessed in four domains: Ideas, Organization, Style, and Conventions. All fifth grade students will take the test on the same day, and there will be one day for make-up. Testing time will be 120 minutes (2 sessions of 60 minutes each).

AR (Accelerated Reader) Throughout the year, students will be recognized for meeting reading goals. There will be limited time for A/R reading in the classroom, therefore most reading will need to be done away from school. AR grading: Two grades are taken for AR—the percentage of points completed and the AR test average

CCGPS: ELA Greater emphasis on critical thinking skills More evidence-based writing in response to literary and informational texts being read More opportunities to read and write in content area subjects like science and social studies Less emphasis on forced-response assessments (multiple choice, true/false, etc.) and greater emphasis on constructed-response assessments (fill-in-the-blank, written response, etc.) Moving away from ALL tests on Friday.
