3 rd Grade – Miss Osborne’s March Newsletter! Biographies and Night of the Notables We have just started taking notes and pulling important information from our biography books. *Please remind students to bring the biography books everyday. We have been reading and taking notes on Harriet Tubman as a class so that students will feel comfortable in taking notes independently on their biography. In the next couple of weeks, the students will work on turning the information they have taken from their books into a short speech. Again, this will be done during class time. We will also be discussing how to give an effective oral presentation, and put together a costume for the final event—the evening of April 5th. As a reminder, this project will take place of books talks for the months of February and March. *A letter about costumes will be sent home in the next week or two. Smarter Balanced Assessment The students have had the opportunity to take the math training test on the SBA website. The training test is teacher directed and allows them to learn and practice using the tools that will be available to them on the test. This week we will be doing some more practice activities in order for the students to have a better understanding of the format of the test. My goal is for them to feel as comfortable as possible with the format so they can concentrate on completing the assessment to the best of their ability. Home practice is not required; however, it is an opportunity for students to learn more about the online test tools and navigating the online assessment interface. We will be testing on March 24, 25, 28 and 29. Please be sure your child gets a good night’s sleep during this time and a healthy breakfast. Thanks for your support! Below is the link for the practice test site: Important Dates: -March 1-4: Read Across America Week *see flyer from last week’s Friday Folders. -March 4: Salmon Platter Art Project 11:50-1:20. *Please send $5 to pay for your child’s salmon platter. *Assessment Packet 2 will also be sent home this day. -March 11: Assessment Packet Cover Letter Due -March 14: Night of the Notables Costume letter will be sent home -March 15: Smart with Art 11:50-12:45 -March 16: PTA After School Movie -March 18: Report cards are available online -March 24: SBA TEST-ELA -March 25: SBA TEST -ELA -March 28: SBA TEST-MATH -March 29: SBA TEST-MATH -March 31: Smart with Art 11:50-12:50 This week in your child’s Friday Folder, you will find the Trimester 2 assessment packet. This will be a portfolio of assessments your child has completed this Trimester. This is an opportunity for you to see a snapshot of your child’s progress during our second trimester. Please make sure you review these assessments with your child and complete the reflection sheet. Please send the reflection sheet back to school by March 11th. Thank you for your support at home! Math We are finishing our Math Unit 7 and will be taking our end of unit test the second week of the month. In this unit we have been learning a lot about multiplication and division patterns, multiplication and division fact extensions and practicing our basic multiplication facts. Please keep practicing math facts with your child every night. It is really starting to pay off! Trimester 2 Assessment Packet
