The first chapter of The Great Gatsby opens with Carraway’s narration about his father and the advice he gave to him “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone [he told me], just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had” (Fitzgerald 1950,7). Similarly, according to Mizener, Fitzgerald was taught by his father” the code of a gentlemen, right instincts and good manners” and he “always saw what others were feeling and sympathized with them, especially if he himself had imposed on them”( 1965,19).

.F. S. Fitzgerald reflects himself through two characters, Jay Gatsby the protagonist and Nick Carraway, the narrator. To Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald attributed his early life, the relationship with his father, his boyhood and his experience in college, and to Jay Gatsby he attached his adulthood, the love of his life and his career and wealth
