Shawn Munro District of North Saanich GIS Technician Steven Hunter District of North Saanich Co-op Student (4 month 2012)

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) used by public and staff to access geographic and property information 2012 Budget, Council approval for GIS upgrades by Co-op student GIS

Co-op Student Projects Improved Accuracy of District Shoreline Improved Civic Addressing Project One Project Two

Project One Shoreline Reconciliation

Project One  Approximately 40km of shoreline  800 or 16% of properties located on waterfront Shoreline Reconciliation

Shoreline Project  Shoreline changes with time

Shoreline Project  Co-op student compared legal plans with existing mapping information

Shoreline Project  Survey monuments were used to improve accuracy

Shoreline Project  Updates to mapping information was completed

Shoreline Project  New Legal Plans provide the current location of the shoreline  Old Legal Plans show the shoreline as it existed in the past

Shoreline Project  BC Land surveyors identify the shoreline, which may be different from older plans  Can result in a very irregular shoreline

Shoreline Project  Some legal plans date back 100 years  It is recommended that a new survey be done

Shoreline Project  Improved shoreline accuracy  Better lot area calculations Benefits

Project Two Civic Addressing

Project Two  Point Based Civic Addressing  Every Business on airport land now has an address  Improves Response Time by Emergency Services Civic Addressing

 Previously there was only one address for the entire marina  Now 17 addresses that provides more accurate data and better emergency response Civic Addressing

 First Nation land does not fall within the municipality however, District is responsible for Emergency Services Civic Addressing

 New civic addressing is used by Emergency Services Civic Addressing

 An accurate civic address results in a timely response by emergency personnel Civic Addressing

 Improved location accuracy  Locate service structures such as pump stations and meter vaults Benefits

 Mapping upgrades ensure data is current and accurate, ultimately improving services to the public Summary GIS Upgrade Project
