Nuclear group activities Nuclear structure research Applied nuclear research Nuclear education & training

Nuclear Structure Research Currently-funded research themes Level ordering and nuclear wavefunction via transfer reactions (SJF + ANL/Munich) Fission fragment spectroscopy with STEFF spectrometer (AGS + ILL/NFS-GANIL) Transition strengths near proton drip line with DPUNS (DMC + JYFL-Finland) Ground state properties via laser spectroscopy (JB, PC, 2 AFs + JYFL/CERN/TRIUMF) Collaborations: Critical to our research success but all themes are Manchester-led. Contribution to development of facilities: Manchester represented on three Programme Advisory Committees (ANL, JYFL, ISOLDE/nTOF-CERN) Main funding: STFC (SJF, DMC, JB, PC), EPSRC (AGS) Pending: STFC Consolidated grant (requesting support for all 4 themes, plus core posts) STFC outlook: Nuclear physics received around £8-9m in 2007, set to fall to £5.79m in 2012/13 with slight recovery in 2013/14 (STFC Delivery Plan). No other STFC funding mechanism except consolidated grant. New STFC Project: we expect one new Project (PPAN has yet to decide) in “ISOL” area which would fit our current research interests

Nuclear Structure Research Strategy Continue to exploit opportunities at the best facilities worldwide and at planned facilities (HIE-ISOLDE, SPIRAL2, EURISOL) Make sure we are closely involved with new ISOL project Involvement with SuperNemo project Look for EU funding is consolidated grant has a bad outcome Flanagan (AF) – School should consider his position in 3 years Naturally expect more interaction with Nuclear Theory Group – not least through managing single consolidated grant and student allocations, and future STFC rolling grant requests

Applied Nuclear Physics – a new sub-grouping Themes Nuclear data at CERN/nTOF (JB, RF + nTOF Collaboration, EPSRC) Fission yields with STEFF (AGS at ILL and NFS-GANIL, EPSRC) Gamma tomography (DMC, PDRA +Christie, STFC-IPS) Space batteries (JB + NNL, ESA/SEA) PhD students 1 EPSRC from Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Visiting Researchers Professor Paul Howarth (MD of NNL) Dr Robert Mills (NNL Visiting Research Fellow) Professor Phil Beeley (Visiting Professor, UAE) Professor Andy Worrall (NNL Visitor) Dr Scott Owen (NNL Visitor) Chris Holmes (NNL/ RAE Visiting Teaching Fellow)

Applied Nuclear Research Strategy Dr John Roberts (Dalton External Liaison Manager) is arranging a meeting between AWE (Threat reduction area), NNL (Nuclear Safeguards) and NW academics (Manch, Liv, Lancs, Daresbury, Cockcroft) to look for new opportunities (Sept 2011) Looking for additional funding to make RF post sustainable from Sept 2012 – BNFL Endowment? Serco? Rolls-Royce? Continue interaction with C-NET/Dalton Increase interaction with ADTR group – nuclear data area, reactor physics. Nuclear group priority will still be STFC-funded nuclear structure research – Applied work unlikely to produce publications that are highly valued by, eg, REF

Nuclear education & training Group delivers most of School’s course units in nuclear physics, nuclear labs, projects Group will support delivery of MACE’s MEng in Mech. Eng. with Nucl. Eng. Deliver course unit for Southampton University (MSc in Sustainable Energy) NTEC delivery (NTEC Coordinating Centre, N03, N32, MSc projects) Nuclear Engineering Industrial Doctorate Centre (Director – JB) From 2011: PG Cert in Nuclear Technology for national “Nucleargraduate” scheme CPD courses: Beginners and Advanced Geant4; MCNP for MSc, PhD and researchers, Answers Suite codes, FISPIN, two courses for EU Safeguards Inspectors Nuclear Summer School in Shandong, 2011

Nuclear education & training Strategy Likely to be strong national and international growth in nuclear education & training, particularly for CPD. We are well-positioned to provide: courses, access and training on industry-standard nuclear codes, reactor simulators, lab training. We will work with HoS, Director of Dalton and Dean to make case for a “track change” for Dr John Roberts to “Senior Lecturer, teaching- focused, linked to funding” with nuclear physics group. (John Roberts is already 60% funded from School of P&A EPSRC grant as “nuclear fellow” for IDC. He is about to get additional funding (20%) for work with EPSRC “Nuclear Champion”. He brings in income to School of P&A from a number of CPD courses. He has excellent industry and EU/IAEA research and education links and deeply involved with funded nuclear outreach activities).
