Welcome to SAMBa Integrative Think Tank 4 6 th – 10 th June #SAMBaITT4

What is a Centre for Doctoral Training? Four year inclusive programme Years 1-2: Courses, project work, research training (tapering away year 2) Years 2-4 PhD (phased in during year 1) Foster independence, confidence in problem solving, long-term technical skills for academic and industrial careers Cohort of students

SAMBa Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath Fusion of stochastics, industrial and applied mathematics, and big data £6M (£4M EPSRC, £2M UoB) to support over 50 PhD students – 5 intakes – Last intake 2018 Leverage additional scholarships en route ITTs are central to the SAMBa student experience

SAMBa team Andreas Kyprianou Paul MilewskiSusie Douglas Jess OhrenGavin Shaddick

SAMBa programme

Integrative Think Tank 4 Partners: Astra Zeneca, NHS 31 students and postdocs – SAMBa, Uni Bath, CIMAT, UNAM 24 academics – Mathematical Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Health – Bath, São Paulo, CIMAT, British Columbia, New York, Leeds 4 representatives from partners 4 from Bath IMI

ITT4 programme

Industrial problems presented Days 1 and 2Days 3 and 4 Day 5 Group discussion Maths questions for further discussion Team work Formulated Maths problems SAMBa PhD project SAMBa Aligned PhD project IMI project Solved ITT structure

Presentations Industrialists and academics present high level problems Group discussions Groups are pre-determined Groups come up with mathematical questions from problems Feedback ideas Team work Teams are formed based on student choice from questions Made up of students, academics, industrialists Some academics will move between teams, and run tutorials if needed Splinter groups (no students) can also form ITT structure

Principles for ITT participants All material treated as non-confidential, ITT is an open forum Intellectual ownership of output lies with ITT participants There is no such thing as a stupid question or comment! Students are the focus of the ITT, please encourage and support. Technical reports produced by students after ITT – input/help encouraged.

Team projects ITT4 Astra Zeneca – Drug design process – Sub group analysis NHS – pharmacology – Missing not at random data – Accessing enormous databases – Balancing TWiCs NHS – joints – Personalised medicine – Image analysis – Radiographic damage – Progression of arthritis NHS – Biomechanics of muscles – Diseased vs healthy muscle response

Outputs Student training in partner engagement Opportunity for partners to explore game-changing research PhD projects for existing SAMBa students Joint academic-partner research proposals New directions for existing non-academic projects Spending a week enjoying doing research IMI projects
