Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. A thought for today…. The happiest people are those who discover that what they should be doing and what they are doing are the same thing!

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Student Assignment… Homework Exercise: Complete MBTI Test. Go to: Home page for HUMANMETRICS. –In the upper left of the home page, click on “Jung Typology Test”. –Scroll down to the and click the “Do It” box. –This will lead you to an online test with 72 questions. You should answer the questions from the standpoint when you are “at work”. –When completed click on “Score It”, print the page with the four letter designator for your personality type and bring it to class for discussion. –Also click on the buttons for the Kiersey and Butt descriptions of your personality type. Print these out and bring these to class.

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Leadership Starts with You! Fryer, p.118 Leaders perform most of their duties by leading, or taking part in, groups… i.e. interacting with others. Therefore they need to: –Understand their own behavior –Improve their social skills –Understand (and appreciate) other people’s behavior

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Individual behavior Fryer, p.111 Is partly determined by personality; Is partly determined by personality; –Who you are; what makes you tick... Greatly influenced by the situation; –How you react to externalities... Greatly influenced by others. –How you interact with other personalities... So… personality is a dynamic set of attributes; heavily influenced by experiences.

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Your Personality Take MBTI Test online –What is your Myers-Briggs personality type –What does it mean and how does it effect your style How are you different? Using the MB profile with others.

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. The Basis of MBTI… According to Carl Jung… “Predictable differences in individuals are caused by differences in the way people prefer to use their minds.” “When you use your preferred method, you are at your natural best, feel most confident and energetic.”

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Short Exercise To demonstrate these “preferences” take 10 sec for the following exercise... Take a blank piece of paper... sign your name as you normally would.

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Short Exercise Now sign with the opposite hand... how does it “feel”??? –Are you comfortable? –Confident? –Would you prefer to sign this way? –Does this signature represent the real you? –Could you learn to sign this way?

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. The Basis of MBTI… The MBTI measures these preferences… –Focus of attention: Extraversion or Introversion –Acquiring information: Sensing or iNtuition –Making decisions: Thinking or Feeling –External orientation: Judging or Perceiving

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Quick review of 8 key descriptors… EI Extraversion vs. Introversion NS iNtuition vs. Sensing TF Thinking vs. Feeling JP Judging vs. Perceiving

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. MBTI - focus of attention (1)… Extroversion Orientation to the outside world Communicate by talking Speak first, reflect later Sociable and expressive Take initiative in work; learn by doing Introversion Private and reflective Communicate in writing Reflect before acting or speaking Learn by reflection or mental practice Readily focus

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. MBTI - acquiring information (2)… Sensing Focus on real and actual events Value practical applications; step by step progress Factual and concrete; detail oriented Present oriented Trust experience iNtuition Focus on possibilities and “big picture” Value imaginative insight; jump from project to project Abstract and theoretical Future oriented Trust inspiration

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. MBTI - making decisions (3)… Thinking Analytical; cause & effect reasoning Logical problem solvers Tough minded; objective Strive for impersonal, objective truth Fair & reasonable Feeling Sympathetic; guided by personal values Assess impact on people in decisions Tender hearted; decide on feelings Strive for harmony and individual values Compassionate & accepting

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. MBTI – external orientation (4)… Judging Scheduled; avoid last minute stress Organized; like control Systematic; move by orderly regulated means Methodical; stick to a plan Like closure; decisions; plans Perception Spontaneous; energized by pressure Open-ended; seek new experiences as they come Casual; confined by plans, lists and structure Flexible; trust their ability to adapt Like things loose and open to change

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Compensating for preferences… Situations require specific behaviors May not be your “preferred” style But, it’s possible to learn a different behavior Takes training & practice Behavior needs to be “convincing”

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. What do the ratings mean? Ratings only a general guide There are no absolutes Behavior depends on situation Use ratings as a tool

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Understanding the numbers-2... E x I N..x S T x F J x P Mild E Strong N Mild T Mild J

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Understanding the numbers-1... E...x I N x S T x F J x.P Strong E Weak S Mild F Strong P

Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E. Using the ratings at work… Basis for understanding co-workers A “systematic” tool or common basis Provides some insight into behavior Analysis of team composition & dynamics For performance; right person for job?
