Introducing your TI-83/84 Plus Graphing Calculator

This presentation will show you how to use your graphing calculator This presentation will show you how to use your graphing calculator. You will: Learn how to care for your calculator Understand basic functions Learn how to use the Algebraic keys Learn how to graph linear functions and quadratics Be able to apply what you’ve learned to the problems in your textbook

Meet your calculator!

Your calculator has buttons for many different functions.

It has a screen large enough to display graphs.

It uses 4 AAA batteries

And it comes with a protective cover.

Handle With Care

Your calculator is costly, so handle it with care

When not in use, always keep it covered.

Don’t drop it!

Keep away from pets

Watch out for thieves!

And don’t get it wet!

Always take care of your calculator, especially if it is not yours.

The Keypad Number Keys Arithmetic Keys – for basic operations (     ) Arrow Keys – moves the cursor in four directions     Graphing Keys – accesses graphing functions Editing Keys – edits expressions and values Scientific Calculator Keys Advanced Function Keys- displays menus for advanced functions

Key Keys for Algebra

On/Off Key  Located in the lower left corner Turns on the calculator by pressing  When the calculator is first turned on, you will see a blinking cursor Turns off the calculator by pressing  then 

Clear Key  Erases the screen

Enter Key  Located at the bottom right corner Evaluates an expression Executes an instruction Selects a menu item

2nd Key  Located at the top left corner Selects the function shown above each key

Mode Key  Located at the top center Determines how what is entered is interpreted Determines how answers are displayed You must press to change a mode setting.

Common Algebraic Keys X-squared  Symbols  Carrot  Parentheses 

Negation Key  Located in the lower right corner Makes a value or expression negative Can not be used for subtraction. An error message will appear.

Activity 1 Let’s practice what you’ve learned so far.

Resetting your calculator Resetting your calculator changes everything back to the default (original) settings. If you are using a school calculator in class, you may need to reset the calculator to erase the settings of the previous user. If you’ve been using your own calculator for games or have changed the settings, you may need to reset your calculator.

Resetting your calculator Press  then  to select the Memory menu.

Resetting your calculator Press  or use the arrow keys to select Reset.

Resetting your calculator Press or use the arrow keys to select Defaults.

Resetting your calculator Press  or use the arrow keys to select Reset

Resetting your calculator Your calculator will show the Default Set screen. Press to continue your work.

Now let’s practice more of what you’ve learned. Activity 2 Now let’s practice more of what you’ve learned.
