What are the circulatory diseases? – High Blood Pressure – Coronary Artery Disease – Heart Attack – Stroke

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM the organ system that takes in food, digests it, and excretes the remaining waste. made up of the digestive tract and accessory organs.

Accessory organs: Liver, pancreas, gall bladder The Human Digestive System Function: supply digestive enzymes that break up the food to make the transportation of food easier.

The Human Digestive Track Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Anus

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Mouth – Food is mechanically broken down by the tongue and teeth. Saliva provides water and enzymes to chemically break down the food. Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Anus Animal Teeth are different depending on diet – See Skulls

Esophagus – Food passes through the tube to enter the stomach.

Stomach - Muscle contracts to churn the food and digestive enzymes and strong acids digest the food

Question: If there is acid in your stomach, how come it doesn’t eat through you stomach?

Small intestine (long and skinny). –Most digestion occurs here. –Nutrients diffuse through the wall of the intestine and enter the bloodstream.

large intestine (short and fat) –The lining absorbs water from the undigested food. –Undigested food is packed into a solid

Anus –Waste exit the body through the opening at the end of the digestive system.

Diseases of the Digestive System Food Sensitivities – irritation of digestive tract by un digestible food (ex. Lactose). Symptoms are nausea, headaches, diarrhea, etc.

Diseases of the Digestive System Food Allergies – The body’s immune system reacts when a certain food is eaten. Causes hives, rash, swelling and anaphylactic shock (ex. Peanuts).

Diseases of the Digestive System Food Poisoning – Eating food or water that is contaminated with bacteria or chemicals they make. Often caused by poor handling and storage (salmonella, botulism). Causes vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea and fever.
