A Training Program for Shareable Metadata Metadata for You & Me is a collaboration between the University of Illinois Library and Indiana University. This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. Metadata for You & Me Section 11: Defining Shareable Metadata: Conformance to Standards

Conformance to Standards Technical conformance to all types of standards is essential. Without it, processing tools and routines simply break. –Sharing protocols (e.g. OAI-PMH) –Metadata structure standards –Controlled vocabularies and syntax encoding schemes –Content standards –Technical standards (e.g. XML, character encoding) 2

Daisy's necklace, and what came of it [electronic resource] : (a literary episode) / by T.B. Aldrich. Aldrich, Thomas Bailey, New York : Derby & Jackson ; Cincinnati : H.W. Derby, [2001 or 2002.] text English Conformance example (1) ' ' + & + +amp; 3

Conformance example (2) <i>GOPHERUS POLYPHEMUS</i> (Gopher Tortoise) COYOTE PREDATION Moore, Jon A. Engeman, Richard M. Smith, Henry T. Woolard, John Gopherus polyphemus is listed as a species of special concern by the state of Florida (Florida Wildlife Code Chap. 39 F.A.C.)… text becomes <i> 4

Conformance for specific elements Names –Some content standards prescribe how many names to provide and in what format they should appear. Subjects –In some cases a local standard may be necessary. Funeral rites and ceremonies Louisiana New Orleans Jazz funerals 5

Activity 2: Put it into practice Look at the shared record at: bin/oai.exe?verb=GetRecord&metadataPrefix=oai_dc&identifier=oai: images.library.uiuc.edu:tdc/7 What doesn't make sense? Look at the record in its native context: What would you have done differently to make this record more coherent and include the appropriate context? 6

7 Metadata for You & Me Online What’s available: –Workshop slides in Powerpoint format –Brief textual versions of workshop materials –Supplemental materials such as references, links, and activities Up next: Section 12: Defining Shareable Metadata: Analysis of Activity 2

8 Credits The development of the Metadata for You & Me curriculum was funded through a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarianship grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services The content for this course grew out of work sponsored by the Digital Library Federation and National Science Digital Library to develop best practices for use of OAI- PMH and shareable metadata We would also like to thank: –Richard Urban, MYM Project Manager –Institutions hosting on-site workshops –…and all participants in the online and on-site workshops for your valuable contributions towards the evolution of this training program This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.
