Density Density describes how heavy an object is compared to its size.
 Density is a measure of how much matter (objects that take up space) is compacted in an area.  What is the formula? Density = mass OR mass ÷ volume.
Volume, Mass, and Density Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Mass is a measure of how much matter is in an object. Mass can be expressed.

Objective: Find volume through displacement. Find density.

Displacement?

1.Mary Jo wants to find the volume of an irregular shaped rock. She puts some water into a rectangular prism with a base that measures 10 cm by 15 cm. When the rock is put into the container. Mary Jo notices that the water level rises 2 cm because the rock displaces its volume of water.

Density: A measure of how much matter is in a certain volume. The measure of the relative “heaviness” of objects with a constant volume.

2.A clump of metal mass grams is dropped into a cylindrical container, causing the water level to rise 1.1cm. The radius of the base of the container is 3 cm. a.What is the density of the metal? b.Given the table, and assuming the metal is pure, what is the metal?

3. Trees that are cut down and stripped of their branches for timber are approximately cylindrical. A timber company specializes in a certain type of tree with a typical diameter of 50 cm and a typical height of about 10 meters. The density of the wood is 380 kilograms per cubic meter, and the wood can be sold by mass at a rate of $4.75 per kilogram. Determine and state the minimum number of whole trees that must be sold to raise at least $50,000.

4. A contractor needs to purchase 500 bricks. The dimensions of each brick are 5.1 cm by 10.2 cm by 20.3 cm, and the density of each brick is The maximum capacity of the contractor’s trailer is 900 kg. Can the trailer hold the weight of 500 bricks? Justify your answer.
