Lesson 31: Metric Weight Ms. Jamie Scordino 3 rd Grade Math

Understanding Metric Weight Weight is the measurement of the heaviness of an object Metric weight is measured in the unit grams.

Types of Grams There are seven different types of grams that we use to measure length. They are kilo gram, hecto gram, deca gram, gram, deci gram, centi gram, and milli gram. We us kilogram, gram, and milligram the most to measure weight.

The Weight of a Kilogram (kg) A kilogram is the largest type of gram and it is equal to 1,000 grams or about 2.20 pounds. We use kilograms to measure the weight of most objects Example: weight of a couch, weight of a dog, weight of a table, weight of a television

The Weight of a Gram (g) A gram is equal to about pounds. We use gram to measure objects that are very small Example: A paperclip is equal to about 1 gram

The Weight of a Milligram (mg) A milligram is the smallest type of gram and it is equal to.001 grams or pounds We use millimeters rarely and only to measure very, very, very small objects.

Metric Staircase Kil Hec Dec Unit Deci Centi Milli

Metric Conversions Kil Hec Dec Unit Deci Centi Milli When you go down the stairs, you x10 Hint: x10 is the same as moving the decimal one place to the right or adding one zero to the end of the number

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli x10 Example 1 g = 1,000 mg x10

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli x10 Example 3 kg = 3,000 g x10

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli Example 62 centigrams = 620 mg x10

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli Example 9 kg = 9,000,000 mg x10

Metric Conversions Kil Hec Dec Unit Deci Centi Milli When you go up the stairs, you divide by 10 Hint: divide by 10 is the same as moving the decimal one place to the left

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli Example 1 mg =.001 g /10

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli Example 24 g = 2.4 decagrams /10

Weight Conversions Kil Hec Dec Gram Deci Centi Milli Example 39 g =.039 kg /10

Your Turn Thank you for a great lesson!
