MST-NYC Inquiry Unit Overview Lesson 1: Tornados, Floods, Hurricanes, Volcanoes and Earthquakes.… OH MY! Lesson 2: Treacherous Tornadoes Lesson 3: Flood Events & Our Food Supply System Lesson 4: Hurricane Impacts Lesson 5: Ready-Set- Tech: When a Volcano Erupts! Lesson 6: Earth-Shake, Earthquakes

MST-NYC Inquiry Unit Overview ADDITIVES: KWL Chart ● Graphic Organizer ● Smart Board ● Web 2.0 Resources Spreadsheet ● Stock Market Task ● Scavenger Hunt ● Model ● Museum Visit

Key Aspects of STEM Lesson Plans LESSON # 2: Web 2.0 Resources # 1 Interactive Fujita Scale Students will experiment with interactive Fujita scale to observe the effects of tornadoes at different levels and rates of speed. # 1 Interactive Fujita Scale Students will experiment with interactive Fujita scale to observe the effects of tornadoes at different levels and rates of speed. # 2 Storm-chaser video alley Students will watch video about Tornado Alley. # 2 Storm-chaser video alley Students will watch video about Tornado Alley.

Key Aspects of STEM Lesson Plans LESSON # 2: Graphic Organizer Students complete a web 2.0 graphic organizer via the smart board to summarize their understanding of tornadoes using three question prompts: How are tornadoes formed? Where do tornadoes most likely happen? How can tornadoes affect living things?

Key Aspects of STEM Lesson Plans LESSON # 3: Two Spreadsheets with Congruent Mathematical Representations Students will research the trading price of two food-based commodities on the U.S. stock markets (using ycharts.com) over a 12-month. Then, they will study another data base for significant flood events over the same period. Students will create pie charts, line and bar graphs to show how flood events affect the trading price of food-based commodities on the stock market and show their interpretation of their findings in a written analysis.

Key Aspects of STEM Lesson Plans LESSON # 4: Scavenger Hunt The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to encourage students to explore resources online in a fun and educational way. Encourage students to explore science, technology, engineering and math through real life scenarios through online website. Challenge students to find interesting facts about hurricane and improve their study skills. At the end of the online scavenger hunt, students will find updated information on scientific research and materials related to hurricane. Furthermore, they will be able to obtain answers navigating through different websites.

Key Aspects of STEM Lesson Plans Smart Board The students will use the smart board to complete a web 2.0 flow chart activity. The flow chart activity will expand students’ understanding of the five critical formation stages of a hurricane. Each group will go up to the smart board to discuss their results with the rest of the class. (Lesson # 4) The teacher engages the students in playing a jeopardy game, where the students answer questions about facts they had learned about volcanoes. This interactive activity promotes the development and practice of academic vocabulary using the interactive features of the smart board. In this resource, pupils need to match up the definitions correctly. (Lesson # 5)

STEM Activity Lesson # 5 Materials: baking soda, vinegar, red or orange food coloring, water, measuring cups, tablespoons, washing detergent, tissue. Materials: baking soda, vinegar, red or orange food coloring, water, measuring cups, tablespoons, washing detergent, tissue. Greater Understanding of Volcanoes. Students will simulate a volcano eruption. Document observation of the eruption through a series of student-drawn diagrams. Construct a storyboard of the "Volcano Recipe." Retell the sequence of the eruption and volcano recipe in front of a movie camera.

Multimedia Elements & Online Resources Storm-chaser video (Lesson # 2) URL: Financial Data Research Platform (Lesson # 3) URL: Students use this online database to research the prices of food during this lesson. How Hurricanes Work (Lesson # 4) URL: Students use this online resource to research information about the hurricane season during the scavenger hunt. Volcanoes, Their Formation, Impact, & Eruption (Lesson # 5) URL: Students will view this interesting & educational videos about volcanoes. Children’s Story: Earthquake (Lesson # 6) URL: Online story book about earthquakes. Wiggio (Lesson # 4) URL: Web application to manage team-based learning.
