Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Potential Risk and Human Factors Unit 2 Exploring Health and Safety

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Aims Learning Outcome 2 Be able to carry out risk assessments nts/BTEC%20Firsts%20from%202010/BF Firsts-Construction-Issue3.pdfhttp:// nts/BTEC%20Firsts%20from%202010/BF Firsts-Construction-Issue3.pdf

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Objectives To extract potential hazards from a video To identify potential hazards and associated risk from a construction site scenario (P3) To explore workplace and human factors To explain how workplace and human factors can affect hazards and risks of a construction site scenario.(M1)

Scenario The flat roof above the windows to the learning zone requires re-roofing. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Flat roof above the Learning Zone windows

Potential Hazards Watch the video and list as many Hazards as you can Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Hazards

A hazard is something that has the potential to cause harm; for example, electricity has the potential to give someone an electric shock when they touch a livewire. Hazards are often classified as: Physical Environmental Chemical Biological Psychosocial Hazards that can exist quite happily; without causing any harm to a person are said to be a low risk for example: an electric cable on a pylon that no one can reach unaided Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Risk A risk is the level of danger a hazard posses and how likely this is to occur. The risk is normally classified as: low medium high this is known as a risk rating. The severity of the risk must be assessed, so that 'control measures' can be applied to reduce the severity of the risk to an acceptable level, in an effort to make sure that the hazard will not cause harm or injury. Being able to spot risks comes from a thorough knowledge and understanding of the different aspects of construction operations involving plant, equipment, machinery and materials Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Environment Hazard Risk. Task 3 (P3) identify six potential risks and hazards for the re-roofing scenario (P3) Working at Height Falling from the roof Re- roofing

Workplace changes Many changes can occur within the workplace over time; these can be rapid or gradual, clear or barely noticeable. Workplace changes include changes in: Temperature Dust Humidity Confined spaces Traffic access and egress Changes like these mean that potential hazards need reviewing. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Human factors The drawing below illustrates the human factors that affect potential hazards and accidents that each of us in a working environment. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Human factors Experience – Attitude - Training - Responsibilities - Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Student Activity Task 4 (M1) from your table above explain how workplace (one) and one human (one) factors could affect hazard and risks (M1) For example: if you choose working at heights then how can workplace and human factors affect the hazard and risk Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
