1 MICE CM25 Engineering Session Summary Contents: Infrastructure Diffuser Coupling Coils Radiation Shutter AFC module EMR Andy Nichols, STFC, 4-7 th November 2009

CM25 Engineering Infrastructure: –Air conditioning complete and working –Air system ready –Step II rolling platform installed and tested –CCR cooling water installation started –Electrical work for Step II a priority –Will shortly begin marking out holes in floor for whole cooling channel –‘Domestic’ work in R5.2 complete, handover from BPG mid-Nov –Some more discussion needed on permutations of MICE steps Nothing will be holding up Step II on its present schedule This should be the last CM at which the infrastructure is mentioned! 2

CM25 Engineering Diffuser: –It’s assembled and working, with air and control systems –Some development of Pb disc transfer required, plan to do with independent mock-up –Will take nine weeks, on critical path –Some thought still needs to be given to installation details Quench forces Tolerance stack-up Shimming on S/SOL flange? As m/f measurement will be useful Also some idea of the flange’s deflection Essential that we capture this on a proper installation drawing 3

CM25 Engineering Radiation Shutter Doors have been made by FNAL Final design drgs of complete installation to be reviewed at December TB He window diameter questioned – CAD exercise required Need to make sure rails have sufficient adjustment range Clarify need for extra tapped holes in S/Sol end plate for shutter rail support with designer Drive mechanism thro’ vacuum is designed Non-magnetic air motor is sourced, but hand operation for now Question: we’re making one set, but we need two. 4

CM25 Engineering AFC Modules Manufacturing at TESLA, UK Design mods to accommodate absorber pipes complete and all effects understood Thermal analysis is done and accepted Production of manufacturing drawings has started Regular project meetings with Tesla now established The fact that there is little to mention is good news! 5

CM25 Engineering EMR Scintillator planes are well in manufacture and QA at UNIGE Need to go at two planes per week for schedule Magnetic shielding around PMs needs to be understood – Mike C or G. Gregoire maybe can help Design of flex circuits to PMs need to be frozen soon Some minor clashes with R5.2 infrastructure anticipated – exchange of CAD models required Delivery of EMR scheduled for July/August,
