Eclipse and Tide Notes Chapter 2 Section 3
Shadows cause eclipses Eclipse - occurs when a shadow makes the Sun or the Moon seem to grow dark Lunar Eclipse – the moon darkens Solar Eclipse – the sun darkens ace/eclipse/
There are two parts of the shadow The shadow has two parts: Umbra – the darkest part of the shadow Penumbra – the lighter part of the shadow
Lunar Eclipse Lunar Eclipse – the moon becomes dark because it passes through Earth’s shadow Can only happen in the Full Moon phase
Solar Eclipse Solar Eclipse – the sun seems to darken because it passes through the Moon’s shadow Can only happen during New Moon phase The Moon is small, so only part of the Sun is covered during an eclipse
Tides The Moon’s gravity causes tides on Earth. The entire pattern, 2 high tides and 2 low tides takes a little more than 24 hours.
