Eclipse and Tide Notes Chapter 2 Section 3

Shadows cause eclipses  Eclipse - occurs when a shadow makes the Sun or the Moon seem to grow dark  Lunar Eclipse – the moon darkens  Solar Eclipse – the sun darkens ace/eclipse/

There are two parts of the shadow  The shadow has two parts:  Umbra – the darkest part of the shadow  Penumbra – the lighter part of the shadow

Lunar Eclipse  Lunar Eclipse – the moon becomes dark because it passes through Earth’s shadow  Can only happen in the Full Moon phase

Solar Eclipse  Solar Eclipse – the sun seems to darken because it passes through the Moon’s shadow  Can only happen during New Moon phase  The Moon is small, so only part of the Sun is covered during an eclipse

Tides  The Moon’s gravity causes tides on Earth.  The entire pattern,  2 high tides and  2 low tides  takes a little more than 24 hours.
