August 25 I can edit sentences for mistakes in comma usage. I can analyze the importance of allusions in a text. I can analyze the influence of a historical period in a written text.

Use commas between two or more adjectives preceding a noun (use the and test). Ex. Lucia is an intelligent, thoughtful, responsible student.  In the first round of golf I played against one fo the best golfers in the state, and beat him soundly.  In the secret chamber Allison called her friend to find a magical wand, the friend helped Allison locate it.  One of my favorite movies is ET, because it is about a friendly extraterrestrial.  I bought a decent affordable used car so now I have to buy car insurance for it. Bell Ringer: Commas with independent/dependent clauses, commas with introductory phrases and clauses, commas with coordinating adjectives

Consider: “The man sighed hugely.” --E. Annie Proulx, The Shipping News 1.What does it mean to sigh “hugely”? 2.How would the meaning of the sentence change if we rewrote it as: The man sighed loudly. 3.What attitude is conveyed by using hugely ? 4.Fill in the blank below with an adverb: The man coughed. Make sure your cough expresses an attitude, but do not state the attitude. Let the adverb imply it. Diction and Tone

Identify the euphemism in the following excerpt. What effect does the euphemism have on the writer’s tone? “…but, unfortunately, little is known of her beyond the fact that Petrovich had a wife, who wears a cap and a dress; but she cannot lay claim to beauty, it seems— at least, no one but the soldiers of the guard, as they pulled their mustaches, and uttered some peculiar sound, even looked under her cap when they met her” (Gogol, “The Overcoat,” 84). Now try to imitate Gogol’s style and tone. Write a sentence about Ms. Botts’s English class that uses a euphemism and expresses the same tone as Gogol’s More Diction and Tone

 Rather than give you specific vocabulary words to study and know from The Scarlet Letter, I want you to keep a vocabulary journal. Each entry should have the following elements: 1.Write the sentence where the word appears and underline or highlight it. 2.Document where you read the word or where you heard it. 3.Define the word. 4.Create your own sentence using the word.  Here is an example: 1.“Do you not come your tardy son to chide, / That, lapsed in time and Passion, lets go by/ the important acting of your dread command?” 2.Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 4, II Chide; to express disapproval if ; scold; reproach 4.His mother chided him for forgetting to do his homework  Each time you turn in a journal, I expect a minimum of 10 entries.  First journal deadline: Vocabulary Journal Assignment

What kinds of wrongdoing do you think should be punished publicly? What kinds should remain private for the people involved? For Journals Choose one of the boxes below and write a response to the topic. Who suffers most: the person who is publicly punished or the one who is punished by his or her conscience/ What kinds of secrets should you keep? When might it be better to reveal a friend’s secret, even though that person will be angry with you?
