The Three Sectors of the Economy From this we can identify 3 distinct sectors involved in the manufacturing and distribution of products. The Primary Sector (Raw Materials from land/sea) The Secondary Sector (Manufacturing/ Construction) The Tertiary Sector (Services Providers)

The Primary Sector Primary producers take materials from the land or sea or use the land or sea to make a product. The main industries involved in primary production are: Agriculture Forestry Fishing Mining Oil Production.

The Primary Sector is divided into Renewable v Non Renewable Resources Renewable Resources are resources that can be used again and again provided they are properly conserved. Examples: farming, fishing, forestry Non renewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made or re-grown on a scale with consumption. Examples: Fossil Fuels, Oil, Coal, Gas

Secondary Producers These manufacture and process the raw materials supplied by the primary producers. Some examples would be: The Building Industry Technological and Pharmaceutical Firms Food Processing Clothing

Transnational Corporations These are foreign owned secondary industry companies that produce goods and services in Ireland mostly for sale abroad An Example would be Intel Ireland ny-overview/intel-leixlip.html

Intel as a TNC Intel employs 5,000 people in Leixlip, Co. Kildare making microchips for computers. It has made over 1 billion chips and also does extensive work in developing new products.

Research Question Why do you think TNC’s would choose to locate in Ireland?

IDA Ireland The Industrial Development Agency (IDA) is the organisation appointed by the Government to attract foreign companies to Ireland. It is one of the best in the world at its job, bringing in over 200 billion Euro worth of factories, machinery and office buildings in over 40 years

Indigenous Industries These are home grown businesses that produce only in Ireland. Many Indigenous Industries come under the heading Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

Tertiary Producers They do not make the products. Instead they supply services that businesses need to operate successfully. This is the most important sector in our economy. Examples include: Insurance Banking Doctors Solicitors

Exercise : In pairs, list the following into three columns to show which are primary, secondary and tertiary. Insurance Companies Agriculture Packaging Firms Furniture Firms Banks Pharmaceutical Firms Mining Solicitors Doctors Forestry Clothing Firms Oil digging Advertising Industries Fishing Construction Worker
