Bell Ringer 11/11/13: Happy Veterans Day! What are we celebrating on Veterans Day? WHY do we celebrate Veterans Day? What does Veterans Day have to do with Democracy?

Democracy and Athens

Agenda: Bell Ringer Ancient Greek Democracy Graphic Organizer Draw and Explain (Greece vs. USA) Reflect!

What does Democracy mean to you? Think-Pair-Share What does Democracy mean to you?

Where does Greece play into this? Think-Pair-Share OR Sticky note “Thought Bubble” Where does Greece play into this?

Use your Graphic Organizer to take notes from the slide show! Democracy in Ancient Greece Athens: Assembly: Citizens of Ancient Greece: USA vs. Ancient Greece:

Athens: The best example of Greek democracy Every citizen took part in the government and made up their assembly.

A group of people gathered together in one place for a common purpose. Assembly: A group of people gathered together in one place for a common purpose.

Think-Pair-Share Do you think it was easy for every citizen to come together and make decisions and run the country?

Let’s make a prediction! Pretend that everyone in your class must decide on the following matter: Should you have recess in the morning or in the afternoon? Think-Pair-Share What do you predict would happen? Would it be easy to come to an agreement?

The Assembly: The assembly became too large 500 citizens were chosen to serve on council for ONE year to make decisions and run the country

The Assembly: They pulled sticks to determine who would serve on the council! Actions of the assembly had to be approved by the assembly of all citizens.

Let’s re-think our prediction: Think-Pair-Share Let’s re-think our prediction: If we were to pull 3 sticks and only those 3 students had to decided on the time of recess, how do you think it would be different than if everyone had to decide together?

THINK ABOUT THIS: In America today who can vote? How old to you have to be to vote? Does it matter if you are a man or women? Do you have to be a certain race?

Ancient Greece was quite different! Citizens of Ancient Greece Men, 18 and older Slaves, women or workers born outside of Athens were not considered citizens and did not have the right to vote, own property or testify in court.

Ancient Greece vs. America You will be comparing the Democracy of Ancient Greece and the Democracy of modern day America! You will split your white piece of paper in half! On one half you will draw what a Grecian citizen would have looked like (use your notes!) under your picture you will describe the Grecian Democracy! On the other side of the page you will draw what an American citizen looks like (this is your picture…be creative!) underneath the picture you will describe the American form of Democracy!

The ancient Greeks were the first to create a democracy The ancient Greeks were the first to create a democracy. The first democracy was……. Like ancient Greece, America has a form of democracy …….

Reflect: On the back of your page reflect as to how the Greek form of democracy differs from the American form of democracy…make sure to use specific examples to support your opinion!
