Good Morning!! 1.Finish Athenian Democracy 2.Athenian Democracy Pro/Con Debate Essential Question: Was ancient Athens truly democratic?

Inquiry Was ancient Athens truly democratic?

Athenian Democracy! YES DEMOCRATIC! (Pro) People are not jealous of each other – People are equal (Doc C) – Being rich or poor doesn’t matter Poor people are able to vote (given money) – Know what EVERYONE needs Ostracism: sent away citizens that had TOO MUCH POWER, got to VOTE for it NOT DEMOCRATIC! (Con) Sexist because only men can vote, don’t include women – Only 12% of population can vote – Only 5,000 of the 12% vote Only native citizens can vote  immigrants can’t vote SLAVES can’t vote. People not equal Ostracism: sent away citizens if became too popular  taking away rights from the citizen!

Pro/Con Debate 1.One Partner is the “director” and the other is the “actor.” 2.The Director claps and states the controversy: PRO 3.The actor explains the PRO reasons. The actor gives 1-2 reasons 4.The director claps and says “Con!” and the actor uses a transition like “however…” “on the other hand” or “then again.” and gives 1-2 Con reasons 5.The director claps again and says “Pro!” and the actor uses another transition and gives more pro reasons. Keep going until Mr. Heiken says to stop! 6.Switch Sides! Now it is the actor’s turn to be the director, and the director’s turn to be the actor! Repeat! 7.When finished, reach an agreement on what side your pair agrees with
