Upcoming Conferences, Workshops and Journals of Interest BRWS Meeting July 18, 2002 Bruce Spencer
How Science Works Publications are the money of science It is money you print yourself Unlike real money, when you spend it, you get to keep it Sometimes when you spend it, the amount you keep gets bigger You use it for real money from funding agencies It’s fun It’s a lot of work It makes your brain hurt Sometimes you print a lot of money but it is useless If you use counterfeit money (plagiarism) you can never earn money the same way again
Strategy When choosing where to publish consider –What you have to say –Who you want to reach –Your time frame CFP date, event date –How much money you have for travel –Who on your team should go where
Places to Publish Journals –Open dates Special Issues of journals –Cutoff dates Conferences –CFP dates, meeting dates Workshops –Often at conferences –More select audience –Less rigid criteria Often follow on opportunities –Conference and Workshop pubs are often extended to become journal pubs –Some new info should be included
Who we want to reach AI Agents Deduction E-commerce Privacy Security Semantic Web Software engineering Web Services Almost any Computer Science area
Travel Money and Bang for the Buck RO’s –Two conf per year from group –More if you bring in money from contracts and licenses Guest workers / Grad students –Nothing from group (well, maybe) –Look to NSERC funding –Conferences often offer grants to pay part Guest workers who are not grad students –Will have own sources International travel an option –look to North America first Seek quality conferences, workshops –Look for organizers who are publish –Look at previous year’s papers –Talk to people
What we have to say Keping –distributed debugging, agents Fang –Privacy, logic, Internet apps Scott –Procurement planning, agents –Economics, e-Commerce Bruce –j-DREW Deduction, software engineering, implementation techniques –New protocols for new markets (agent literature) Sandy –Web Services, software engineering
