FROM UNEASY PEACE TO BITTER CONFLICT 2 nd Period Kelly Valdez Sam Klyce R.I.P. Zach Matheney

The country was headed towards disunion caused by slavery, which is what Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John Calhoun all wanted to avoid The Dred Scott Case was presented to the high court and pointed out as unacceptable Abraham Lincoln stepped in the picture and attempted taking Stephen Douglas’s seat in Congress – caused controversy that lead to the Election 1806 John Brown tried to create a slave rebellion but failed and instead made the north and south feel uneasy about the future union

ABRAHAM LINCOLN WON THE PRESIDENCY, CAUSING THE STATES TO FORM THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA

THE DRED SCOTT DECISION Dred Scott was a slave taken to Illinois for several years before he returned back to Missouri Scott’s freedom case made it the Supreme Court They rejected Scott because he was African American, and the years he was not in Missouri caused his freedom to vanish Dred Scott

The Court stated that Congress did not have the right to forbid slavery in any territory The Missouri Compromise was now declared unconstitutional Roger B. Taney was chief justice of the Court Abraham Lincoln, along with many other northerners, inferred that the Supreme Court should declare slavery unable to be excluded The last standing national political institution was the Democratic Party, supported by northerners and southerners

THE LINCOLN- DOUGLAS DEBATE In 1858 Stephen Douglas fought in a political battle against Abraham Lincoln in face to face debates throughout Illinois Douglas believed that “popular sovereignty” was a sacred right of self government Lincoln acknowledged that Douglas’s beliefs went against the Dred-Scott decision, which entitled the citizens to no such power previously stated

Douglas wrote the “Freeport Doctrine” which stated that whatever the Supreme Court would ultimately decide would not be as important compared to the choices or actions of the American Citizens While Douglas promoted his “Freeport Doctrine,” Abraham led a campaign to declare that “A House Divided Could Not Stand”

JOHN BROWN’S RAID  On October 16, 1859, John Brown and his men rallied into Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. They gave fellow slaves firearms and took out anyone who opposed them.  They were eventually surrounded by the people of the town, and were shot at from all sides.  The raid barely went on for over a day.  The effects were crucial to the division of the north and south.

FEAR THE BEARD?

THE ELECTION OF 1860  In spring of 1860, Democrats from around the country meet to choose who will present their party in the upcoming election.  Democrats from the south abandon the convention with fury, and chose John Breckinridge as their candidate, with the Northerners deciding upon Stephen Douglas.  Republicans notice the democrats peeling apart like a banana, and realise they have the advantage. They choose Abraham Lincoln.

 The Constitutional Union Party chooses John Bell as their candidate, who was famously known for ignoring problems between the North and South.  Lincoln wins the election with 180 electoral votes.

THE SOUTH SECEDES  Only days after Lincoln’s victory, South Carolina succeeds from the Union, and are closely followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.  These states form their own government known as “The Confederate States of America”, and elect Jefferson Davis as their president.

LINCOLN INAUGURATED  Senator James Henry Crittenden attempts to save the destruction done, but fails.  Lincoln inaugurated on March 4 th, 1861.
